.Earthquake at Dawn (Great Episodes) by: Kristiana Gregory 2003-09 This was a great book. I just couldn't put it down. The way Kristiana Gregory describes the damage and everything Edith and Daisy see makes you feel like you were actually there, like you experienced it. This book proves that the 1906 earthquake really was a tragedy, and makes you feel thankful for life itself, judging on the death toll in that book. I loved this book. .Eleanor: Crown Jewel of Aquitaine (Royal Diaries) by: Kristiana Gregory 2002-11 My 9 year old daughter was very excited about this book series, but as a parent, I have been disappointed in the four books that I have read. Eleanor is no exception. This book contains several scenes which are disgusting -- a child who vomits up a ball of writhing worms, another child who has a worm come out of its eye (Eleanor calls for the doctor then watches as this worm fully emerges, as long as Eleanor's arm), a kitten falls down a privy chute and drowns, and Eleanor's sister writes a poem about this kitten's experience in her diary (mercifuly, the poem is not included in this book). While no doubt things like this happened in this time period, I felt these scenes did not add in any way to this book. When my daughter read the worms ... .Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile (Royal Diaries) by: Kristiana Gregory 1999-09 I'm 15 years old, and have read two books from this series. I personally have always found history very boring, and dropped it as soon as I could, however I found this book interesting and fun to read. I think the fact that the way the book focuses on her childhood is one of the most compelling factors, and by the end of the book I was so attatched to Cleopatra as a character that I eagerly read through the factual end sections describing the rest of her life. I felt that I learnt more about the time period (and Cleopatra's life) by reading this than I ever would have in a classroom, where I would have been distracted and bored. If you can read grown-up's book, you should read some history book like Henri Troyat. And Royal Diaries have another Russian royal story.
