.Poland (Lonely Planet Country Guide) by: Krzysztof Dydynski May 31, 2002 Travel guide purchasing often comes down to a choice between Lonely Planet and Rough Guide, and the case of Poland, Lonely Planet is in second place. On a week long visit to Poland in April 2006, carrying a copy of the Lonely Planet guide and accompanied by a friend who had the equivalent Rough Guide, we found the Rough Guide to be the superior volume. Lonely Planet has the basic information on eating, drinking and sleeping, and there is little to choose between the two popular guides for those, but for history, culture and background information we found the Rough Guide to be far better. .South America on a Shoestring (Lonely Planet Shoestring Guides) by: Sandra Bao, Charlotte Beech, Krzysztof Dydynski March 01, 2004 Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). However, the layout is accurate and helps to orientate yourself around cities. The information regarding major tourist attractions is useful ... .Colombia: A Travel Survival Kit (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) by: Krzysztof Dydynski September 30, 1995 This small compact book carries a gigantic wallop. It is filled with information from cover to cover and is by far the best travel book on Colombia I have ever come across. Moreover, the introduction and historical narrative is simply outstanding. This book is a great travel companion and if used properly will unlock the beauty and treasures that Colombia has to offer. Author Krzysztof Dydynski was born in Poland but lived in Colombia for four years and manages to capture the best and brightest features of the nation. The author is comprehensive and includes sketches, photos, maps and a first class index. The only downside of this valuable book is that it is a little outdated. However, when travelling within Poland what I carried with me was the Lonely Planet Polish Phrasebook. Without a doubt it turned out to be the best phrasebook I have ever used. In particular, the menu decoder and food-related section were incredibly useful. Pretty much everything that we ate during our travels was in the phrasebook. Also useful in the book are the printed, phonetic forms of most of the phrases in the book. It obviously helps to have an idea about the sound of Polish already, but with the basics of pronunciation these phonetic forms are very handy indeed.
