. Gospel of Judas, The
from: National Geographic Society
April 07, 2006
I will not repeat information about the book which has been covered by other reviewers. If you are thinking of purchasing this attractive looking and reasonably priced book you need to be aware there is now a scholarly consensus that the original team made some very serious errors of translation and completely misrepresent the figure of Judas in this gospel. This makes this book virtually worthless if you want to understand what the Gospel of Judas is about. For more information I would suggest you look at DeConick's "The Thirteenth Apostle".

. Phil Hellmuth Presents Read 'em and Reap: A Career FBI Agent's Guide to Decoding Poker Tells
by: Joe Navarro, Marvin Karlins
March 01, 2007
So this isn't the best made book, and Joe Navarro isn't a poker player. But I do believe this book is capable of telling players who find it difficult to read "Caro's book of Tells" a clear understanding on what to look for. I am not the best of reading players, but this book has helped to notice a number of things which some of my opponents I regularly play live do, which tells me whether they have a hand or are bluffing. It also has some new ideas, which Caro does not have printed, which he gives an idea on why they do certain things, which I have also considered to be useful.
I am not saying this book is better Caro, it's not even on the same league, Caro's is still the main man for understanding poker tells. But Navarro's book would ... Read More:

. The Emotion Machine: Commonsense Thinking, Artificial Intelligence, and the Future of the Human Mind
by: Marvin Minsky
November 13, 2007
Dullest book by a major scientist I have ever read
I suppose if you know almost nothing about cognition or AI research you might find this book useful. For anyone else it is a horrific bore. There are hundreds of books in cog sci, robotics, AI, evolutionary psych(EP) and philosophy offering far more info and insight on cognition than this one. Minsky is a top rate senior scientist but it barely shows here. He has alot of good references but they are seldom discussed in any depth and there is lots more left out than included on the subject of AI, cognition and the mind. Like nearly everyone in cognition, AI and EP research, he has no clue that Wittgenstein laid out the high level structure of our psychology and made penetrating comments on minds and ... Read More:

. The Gospel of St Thomas
by: Marvin Meyer
April 13, 1993
Every man, woman and child should have one of these as a day to day glimpse into the philosophies of Jesus. My own interpretation of Jesus' message written for the people comes across loud and clear to me, in fact I think I was meant to read this book, because it echos those feelings deep in my own heart. When feeling down, for what ever reason, pick up this beautiful little book and you can only feel better. "Don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing" Jesus said this ....... This book is a valuable guide to life as much in todays world as then. Jesus was a man, a Son of God,, all people in his eyes were equal ..... no matter the creed, colour, race, nation, gender or sex. Truly a man for all time. His life and death is testimony to what can ... Read More:

. Diane Arbus (Aperture Monograph)
from: Aperture
November 01, 1996
A friend working in bookstore asked why I'd never mentioned being in Diane Arbus' "book of freaks". Until that moment I didn't know but of course I knew she'd photographed me. (There's a hint!) It was without a doubt one of the most intense experiences of my life. That she often saw what others could not is reflected on every page. She called her subjects aristocrats. I think you must be one to see that quality in another. The photographs taken thirty years ago are timeless.Although the clothing, hairstyles and makeup are from a definite era (sixties) one can hardly imagine the subjects dressed any other way. Arbus has created a nation of anachronisms in her book. There is a definite sense of family, of community from page to page; from ... Read More:
