The Rough Guides rarely disappoint. They are thorough and interesting. My only complaint is that Murcia, as usual in guidebooks like this, just doesn't get the treatment it deserves. I always buy the most recent edition, but suggest you can probably skip an edition now and then!

. The Rough Guide to the Pyrenees (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Marc S. Dubin
August 02, 2007
I'm planning to walk over the Pyrenees from Catalonia to the Midi this summer, and was looking for a good resource to give me a well-informed idea of possible starting points, finishes, distances and the natural obstacles involved. Although the Rough Guide was slagged off somewhat by previous reviewers for being a) too big to be properly useful as a hiking guide, and b) too useful specifically for hikers (there's no pleasing some people!), I'm glad to say that it's perfect for me - I'm not going to take it on the trip, but I'll be siphoning every little bit of information from it while planning. And there's a lot of information. For instance, all the telephone numbers for refuges are there ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Turkey - Edition 6
by: Marc S. Dubin, Rosie Ayliffe, John Gawthrop, Terry Richardson
January 25, 2007
Having just returned from my first visit to Turkey I can only agree with the negative comments voiced by other reviewers. The general tone veers between sneering at the reality of turkish society and derision of anything that remotely relates to the general tourist. All this would be bad enough were the text not hopelessly out of date. Selecting a couple of examples at random from an extraordinary list of errors; Descriptions of the Bodrum penisula include references to sailing schools in Bitez. Guys! - all the schools moved further round the peninsua at least 3 years ago. For Ephesus the visitor is instructed to walk from the lower to upper gates (insane if you've ever been there), no warning of the extreme heat everyone will experience - even ... Read More:

. Greek Islands (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
by: Marc S. Dubin
February 01, 2007
This is a portable, soft cover, coffee-table book! It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through the Greek islands and their histories. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land!

. The Rough Guide to Cyprus (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Marc S. Dubin
September 29, 2005
A good guide, especially if you are the type that like reading a bit. The rough guides are more text than for example the lonely planet ones.
I like reading a bit and like the detail and the history section, so this was good for me.
The big drawback is the negative point of view of the author. He seems to find all things that are wrong with Cyprus. If you buy this guide, which is very good in many ways, don't let this overwhelm you. The problem with focusing on the negative is that you miss out on the small pearls that are good and beutiful in the middle of the less-than-great aspects of Cyprus. As an exampel Agia Napa is a tourist development disaster - true - but there are also interesting and nice things to do - such as going ... Read More:

. Greece, Athens and the Mainland (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
by: Marc S. Dubin
May 31, 2007
I took along the Eyewitness Travel Guide for "Greece: Athens & The Mainland" on our trip to Greece because it showed us everything we are not going to see (Hang on, this will make sense). These DK volumes pride themselves on being "The guides that show you what others only tell you," being filled with over 1,000 photographs, illustrations, and maps. There are cutaways and floor plans of all the major sites that we are seeing, just as the Parthenon and the monastery of Varlaam. But in a week in Greece there is only so much you can see and if we not have time to visit everything in Athens and are only visiting two of the monasteries of Meteora, then this DK Eyewitness Travel Guide will show us something of what we are missing. There are sections on Ancient Greece ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to France (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

I'm a big fan of the Rough Guides for cities and own a few, including the one for Paris, and have found them to be excellent containing every bit of information I could possibly need.
This guide tries to squeeze the whole of France into a book the size of a city guide, which means it only has space to describe briefly a few major towns in each province.
For backpackers this may be adequate information, but is of limited use to someone trying to plan day trips. Maybe a guide to each of the provinces would have been better.

. The Rough Guide to the Dodecanese and East Aegean: Includes Rhodes, Kos, Sames and Lesvos (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
from: Rough Guides Ltd
May 30, 2002
I am always a big fan of the Rough Guide books. They save you so much time, effort and money and have never let me down in the past (onto my fifth one now). So it was with no hesitation that I ordered my Rough Guide for our latest trip to Rhodes. I was a little disappointed that Rhodes did not warrant a book in itself (having been impressed by the wealth of information contained in the Crete edition last year), and that presents my only minor gripe - the main areas had a lot of information, the smaller towns and villages not so much. We tend to drive all over the place exploring the places that others don't see in addition to the tourist areas, but some of the smaller places had only a paragraph or two, where the Crete book would have 2-3 pages for an equivalent place.
