. Acorna (Acorna 1)
by: Anne McCaffrey, Margaret Ball
January 02, 1998
I've found that Anne McCaffrey can be very hit-and-miss author. I found this book ver good. The basic story line is that a unicorn is floating in space in an escape pod. Some miners find the pod and adopt the girl as their own. The first part is heartwarming as it deals with bringing up a child (although having 3 fathers is a little unusual). The second part deals with Accorna's, the name they give her, attempts to right wrongs. Accorna and the miners work to put an end to that industry and to liberate those children. I loved this book because it has good charactisation and plot. It has a heart and deals with real issues in a compelling way.

. Disappearing Act
by: Margaret Ball
October 01, 2006
This is a really good action story by Margaret Ball. Those of her novels which I have previously read have been fantasy but this one is science fiction.
The central character is an young orphan called Maris who lives on a space station where the only life available to her is to work for the boss of a criminal gang. The gang boss orders her to tail a woman who has been asking too many questions. Then the woman is captured by the gang, turns out to be a government agent or "Diplomat" called Calandra Vissi with all sorts of special abilities, and walks out of an airlock to avoid being forced to tell what she's up to.
Noting some resemblance between Maris and Calandra, the gang boss decides to ... Read More:

. Mathemagics
by: Margaret Ball
August 03, 1998
It's rare in our family when a book can generate this much enthusiasm for both a 50-year old mom and a 12-year old daughter. The story was funny, witty, and articulate. The strong female characters were a relief to my daughter...of course, in most books, these characters are male. Also, there was the woman warrior aspect to it, which is very exciting to young girls now, with Xena et al. being watched.
The only complaint we had was the lack of sequel or prequel (n novel length). We both want more, more, more of these characters!
