.The Rough Guide to California: Includes Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon (Rough Guide Travel Guides) by: Jeff Dickey, Paul Whitfield, Nick Edwards, Mark Ellwood August 25, 2005 I was really disappointed with this book, as I have had great experience with Rough Guide's to other places in the past. .California (Rough Guide Travel Guides) by: Jeff Dickey, Nick Edwards, Mark Ellwood, Paul Whitfield April 24, 2003 Get this book before leaving for California. As a California historian, columnist, travel writer and author of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this book an excellent source to advise visitors to read prior to making the trip. My only negative comment is that this book, as with too many others like it, refelcts incorrectly that Southern California is all about 1. Los Angeles (and the immediate area) or 2. San Diego. In actuality, lifetime residents (as myself) will tell you there is so much more to So-Cal than L.A. and San Diego. And, contrary to the belief that So-Cal is nearly always sunny, this is only true in the coastal areas. For this fact alone, I must applaud the author for keeping me entertained with informative and interesting snippets of information. The communication style of the book is in-keeping with the, now well-established, format of the 'Rough Guide' series, being concise and honest in it's appraisal of the area(s) reviewed. If I have to make a critical comment, it would be that it appears that the author is rather biased towards Miami, with the detail being more exhaustive for this area than any other part of Florida. Although their guide books are really comprehensive, that's also their biggest downfall. There is far too much information, and very little in the way of recommendations. The book is extremely wordy, and is organised firstly by district, so if you don't know what area you want to visit, you'll end up having to read about the entire city so you can make a decision. In other words, if you're only going for a few days, you'll have to read the thing cover-to-cover and even then you still won't be sure what's worth seeing and what to miss.
