. Dark Continent: Europe's Twentieth Century
by: Mark Mazower
June 24, 1999
In this fascinating history, author Mark Mazower traces this history of Europe from the end of the First World War, through to when the book was written in 1998. This is not a list of dates and battles, but so much more than that. The author traces the evolution of Europe's thought, and as such culture. It begins with the 1920s' embrace of democracy and the rise of the minorities issue, continues with the 1930s' rejection of democracy, the rise and fall of the extreme Right in the 1940s, the evolution of the two halves of divided Europe, and on to Europe's post-Communist development. I have read many, many history books; most being the standard list of names and dates, battles and elections. But every once in a while I encounter a ... Read More:

. Salonica, City of Ghosts: Christians, Muslims and Jews
by: Mark Mazower
October 17, 2005
If you are interested in the history of Greece, of the Balkans, or of the Ottoman Empire, this beautifully written book is not to be missed. I disagree with the reviewer Yorgos who wrote that Mazower adopts the "stubborn and annoying British habit of calling the city "Salonica."" Mazower's book is about the history of the city from the the Ottoman conquest to the end of the 20th century, which is more than five centuries. During this period the city was called "Selanik" by the Ottomans, "Solun" by the Slavs, "Salonico" by the Sephardic Jews and "Saloniki" by Greeks. The ancient name "Thessalonike" (modern pronunciation: "Thessaloníki") was restored after the Greek conquest (1912) and it is still used today. "Salonica" is simply a shorter form of ... Read More:

. If Not Now, When? (Penguin Modern Classics)
by: Primo Levi
September 07, 2000
My review of 'Mila 18' by Leon Uris seems to have got lost somewhere in cyberspace. Never mind. If you want to read a book about a group of Jews fighting back during WWII, this one is much better, anyway. It starts rather slowly, but as more characters are introduced, a tapestry of pictures and stories emerge from what begins as a rather grey fabric. By the end of the book they had become my family. They are a small band of men and a few women who carry on small scale guerilla warfare on the German side of the eastern front during the Russian advance across eastern Europe. They tramp from White Russia, through the Pripet Marshes, through Poland and Germany, eventually ending up in post-war Italy. They fight no great battles, and are under no ... Read More:

. The Balkans (Universal History)
by: Mark Mazower
August 31, 2000
Having read this book I find it hard to agree with the title. While it is a great (perhaps too brief) look at the circumstances that may have resulted in the atrocities of the Yugoslav wars, it paints only a very broad and selective picture of what the Balkans might mean. Without giving too much of a historical background, the book points out the stereotypes regarding the savage nature of the region's inhabitants and clearly tries to confirm them and explain them partially by its distance from the centre of Europe. The subject is treated quite superficially and lack of explanation of various processes is apparent. If you want to know what happened and when look elsewhere. This book will give you a nice read, but it will satisfy only if you prefer opinions ... Read More:
