. Wine for Dummies (For Dummies)
by: Ed McCarthy, Mary Ewing-Mulligan
October 06, 2006
The best thing about this book is that it is written by two real wine experts, who remember well what it was like to be a "wine newbie." Ed is a former teacher who became interested, in wine, and met Mary at an Italian wine tasting in New York City. Two years later, they married, and formally merged their wine cellars and wine libraries. Ed has co-authored six wine books, and is the sole author of Champagne for Dummies. He also writes for Wine Enthusiast Magazine and Decanter. Mary entered the retail wine business right out of college, when she accepted a position with the Italian Trade Commission. Today she runs a wine school based in New York City called International Wine Center, which mainly trains wine professionals. ... Read More:

. Pale Fire (Penguin Modern Classics)
by: Vladimir Nabokov
August 31, 2000
Pale Fire explores the wayward mind of Charles Kinbote, a university teacher brimming with outrageous delusions. Firstly, he believes himself to be the exiled King of Zembla (Zembla being a "distant northern land" in the vain of Hyperborea or, say, Avalon). Secondly, Kinbote is obsessed with an old poet named John Shade, who just happens to live across the way on campus, and it's with Shade's latest and last poem that the novel begins, a poem which Kinote utterly misinteprets as being about his life in the kingdom of Zembla and his daring escape to America from a plot to assassinate him. The result of all this delusion is a humorous, puzzling, and brilliantly imaginative account of one man's insanity, a madness that turns out to be strangely endearing, ... Read More:

. Memories of a Catholic Girlhood (Vintage Classics)
by: Mary McCarthy
March 02, 2000
This book was far to verbose & tedious to be enjoyable. It only covered about 9 years of Mary's life, and then more about her aging relatives than her, hardly a childhood. Anyone expecting scandalous or even startling revelations will be disappointed. Mary even says that many of her readers have contacted her to say their childhoods were just like hers, which comes as no surprise as it is very typical, mundane and possibly like hundreds of childhoods of this era, but unlike Mary they've not felt compelled to bore other's with it. Unless you want to impress your friends with a new diction then don't bother purchasing this book, and if curiosity has got the better of you, borrow it from the library.
