. The Rough Guide to Cuba (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Fiona McAuslan, Matthew Norman
August 30, 2007
In short, the rough guide to Cuba was a sincere disappointment to me.
Of course it was not all bad, the almost 700 pages certainly contain loads of background information about Cuba which are informative and worthwhile to read. However, there a three major points that bug me the most and which I consider to be essential to any travel guide.
1) Maps: Detailed maps of Cuba, its provinces and its cities are vital for travelling around. Especially the regional maps lack in detail with important places left of the map. When directions in the guide are phrased as such: "the best place to stay in the mountain area is the villa santo domingo, about 68km souhtwest of Bayamo" and the place is not on any map it is somewhat hard to find.

. Cuba: The Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Fiona McAuslan, Matthew Norman
April 05, 2000
For a Change I thought I would buy a rough guide rather than the equivalent "lonely planet", however I was disapointed. Although fairly well researched, for the independent traveller this is one rough guide that just isn't rough enough - for example it does'nt mention any budget accomodation on Cayo Coco when there are infact 3 (A Motel, A Campismo and possible to stay at Sitio La Guira in a hut). Again I met some people in Vinales Valley following a trail in their Lonley Planet guide, of which the was no suggested trail in my Rough Guide. Sorry to be negative but I felt several times the lonley planet (which I found my self reading from fellow travellers) had the edge on my visit to Cuba. Next time I know which guide I'll be buying....

. Con Ed Unabridged
by: Matthew Klein
2007
A convicted con-man, now released from jail, happens upon a new scam opportunity just as his son seeks his help to deal with some serious gambling debts.
This is an easy-going novel with a reasonable plot and some good humour. It is all over the top though unless "cons" are your thing : money, help and ideas to keep the con afloat seem to come from everywhere. There are a number of twists and it moves along at a cracking pace. Few would pick the outcome(s) so Klein does well with his weaving.
That said, I just felt there was something missing. I sort of wanted the protagonist to "win" but neither he nor the other characters were people to warm up to. I therefore think Klein could have done better with his characterisations. The writing ... Read More:
