This brick of a book is truly excellent. The detail is superb & the writing is of the highest quality. Burleigh offers a fresh perspective on an extremely well documented period of history.
I found this book engrossing & difficult to put down.Charting the rise of Nazism & the decisions & dogma which shaped Nazi policies, this book is surely a must for those with an interest in the subject.
It is obvious why this book has won the plaudits it has. The section on the invasion of Russia is particularly well done, although the whole book is of the highest quality. A work of immense proportions.

Gave up on this book after a few chapters. Found the author to be a narrow minded arse quite frankly. I had to laugh at many of his opinions that were not backed by any facts but only his right wing bias. I skipped a few chapters to see if it would get any better but it just got more ridiculous. I am glad I didnt buy this book I only borrowed it from the local library and I couldnt take it back soon enough.

Burleigh's book is raw, historical background which by volume would do credit to a good research assistant but, by value, needs editing and organisation. He chronicles a number of terrorist campaigns, deals with movements - the attention seekers - violent struggles in Spain and Ireland. He then considers Islamic terrorism. The trouble with raw data it is hard to digest.

In a book of too few conclusions, he points out that terrorism attracts the worst and the dullest, a way of making mundane lives meaningful, gaining notoriety. It can be exciting, for a while. Burleigh and Wippermann describe in heart-rending detail the Nazis' project to biologically transform Germany and all nations that might eventually fall under its sway. The Nazis' attention to detail in their bizarre attempts to re-structure humanity is as insane as one might have expected, and one is struck by the wide acceptance these ideas received among both scientific communities and the public at large.

Although the book focuses on the Germans, it should not be forgotten that their warped views of eugenics and the 'health' of nations were common all over the world at the time, nor that they had thousands of willing helpers from other countries in their murderous endeavours.
