I am so pleased that the "This Is" series of books by Miroslav Sasek are back in print. Elsewhere, the comments on Sasek's work have been "only good for children up to 3 years!" Well, I'm in my fifties and I intend to collect the ones I most enjoyed as a child, such as This Is San Francisco and This Is Rome. In an age of electronic wizardry Sasek's books stand out as a reminder of a time when books were the chief form of entertainment and education.

Sasek's art and wit are truly original and unique. He manages to take the reader on a journey through both the landmarks of his subject and the everday minutiae that makes up a country and its culture. Each book is a remarkable achievement.

I totally disagree with the "review" that said that this book was suitable for children up to the age of 10 only.

Although my children are only six and nine and both hugely enjoy all the Sasek books, my husband and I also fully endorse the content and pictures, old-fashioned as it may be; moreover, whoever we have shown the book to, young and old, have instantly said, "I simply must have that book" or "I simply must get that book for so and so, etc." Some of the out of date factual information has been updated in the back of the book, and so what, any way? - what a treat to see the world how it was fifty years or so earlier, a lot more picturesque than it is now, and therein lies its charm. I purchased this book on a whim. In fact, I purchased it even before we had the trip planned. I almost forgot to bring it along when we did go. But my 4 year old daughter didn't. She seemed to like the illustrations. So when we did come upon the first sight that she recognized from her book (the coloseum) she became very animated. It made a huge impact on my daughters involvement in our family travel. She was no longer just a passenger along for the ride...she was involved in the trip and anticipated seeing things that she recognized from HER book.

The book also had an intriguing description of a key hole on top of the Aventine hill with a great view. We decided to hunt it down and were pleasantly surprised. It was a secret ... Read More:

As a Hong Kong resident for the past thirteen years I was delighted to see this beautiful book re-released. Hong Kong has changed greatly since it was first published and yet there are so many wonderful features of Hong Kong life depicted beautifully in the book which still exist.
