.Banker to the Poor: The Story of the Grameen Bank by: Mohammad Yunus, Alan Jolis July 11, 2003 This is the book that made me want to know more about microfinance, I found it very inspiring and Dr Yunus became my personal hero. I then learned more about microfinance, talked to senior microfinance experts, and even though microfinance is indeed a powerfull tool to fight poverty, it is not the panacea it sometimes claims to be. Microfinance can have a negative impact on social fabric, increasing tensions inside communities, it can also be used by governments of developping countries as a way to privatise social welfare, typically after massive lay-offs from the private sector(why spend public money on unemployment benefits, minimum wage, let's bring microfinance instead to help the poor..). .Banker to the Poor: The Autobiography of Muhammad Yunus, Founder of the Grameen Bank by: Mohammad Yunus, Alan Jolis July 31, 2001 A friend recommended this book to me and it was fantastic -- well worth reading I couldn't put it down. When you get to the end of the book, you find yourself wanting to set up your own branch to help people. It is the first book that has managed to simply explain (and retain my interest) in micro-economics. you can't help but have admiration for Mohammed Yunus -- for the work he has done -- by setting up branches that only lend money to the people who need it most, by giving them affordable ways to pay it back, and for allowing the people to create their own sustainable means of living. And also for helping women to become valued and essential people in their communities. So I decided to go to Bangladesh and find it out for myself. I spent one month both in the headquarters in Dhaka and living in the branches in rural areas.
