Despite the inferior quality of the photo reproduction I've always thought that Rough Guide is better value than Lonely Planet. It is generally more informative, more erudite, and the style is arguably geared to a wider readership, while LP leans more towards backpackers and gap-year students. I also think LP is more prone to hyperbole while Rough Guide is normally unflinchingly honest about places. It's perceived negativity is for me a bonus as it is often better to travel with lower or at least realistic expectations. As it says in the opening gambit, many travellers head for India expecting to 'encounter a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to find one of the most materialistic societies on the planet'. This book is excellent, not only is it very funny but very illuminating as to how the NHS works now.
As a Conservative Councillor it grieves me to say where Labour have got it right but pulls no punches on where it has gone wrong.
I'd recommend every politician or who people who need to use the A& E department to read this book.
I happily recommend for anyone who enjoys a good read but wants to learn something as well.

This book is excellent, not only is it very funny but very illuminating as to how the NHS works now.

It would seem almost impossible to write a one-volume travel book on the USA but somehow Rough Guides has managed it in style.

I would usually hesitate to spend more than £15 on a paperback but this is so detailed and well-written I find myself returning to it again and again.

These days it's probably easier to use online resources when choosing accommodation but as a pithy guide to resorts and for planning trip itineries, this Rough Guide is invaluable.

I'd bought my flight tickets, travel insurance and the all important Visa for entering India. Next on the list was the guide book. It was a choice of this one or the Lonely Planet guide book.

Both were published around the same time, and I've used both before for different countries, so I'm happy with their layout and content. However, choosing the right guide this time seemed far more difficult.

Both contained detailed information about the places I plan to visit. However, I found some bits were present in one book, but not the other, and vice-versa. In the end I decided to go for both books. I'm travelling in South India for 3 months, so I thought it would be worth the luxury of having two guides.

when i read this book i thought that it was written by amateur travellers.Well if someone would like to write a travell book of a country i think that he must read first some books of the history and culture of the place .In this book we can see an epidermic show of greece.Too many bars cafe's etc etc(greece is full of them it is not a big deal to introduce some of them).Speaking of history of greece this book is definitely not a masterpiece :)

when i read this book i thought that it was written by amateur travellers.Well if someone would like to write a travell book of a country i think that he must read first some books of the history and culture of the place .In this book we can see an epidermic show of greece.Too many bars cafe's etc etc(greece is full of them it is not a big deal to introduce some of them).Speaking of history of greece this book is definitely not a masterpiece :)

John Gill is no Lawrence Durrell, and this is not necessarily bad. While it is highly unlikely that anybody will show any interest in this guide 60 years after its publication, I have to admit that it is quite useful now. Having returned from a two-week holiday spent with friends on Corfu and Paxos in August, I can confirm that we put the guide to good use. It contains the usual blend of the descriptions of attractions, historical information, an occasional topical articles (like The Ionian School of Painting), and of course practical information.

As for practical information: the author himself admits that the situation with ferries changes from one year to another, so you have to check it yourself. Most ferry companies have their own Web sites nowadays, ... Read More:

This article refers to this new edition of the Rough Guide to India.

What I like about Rough Guides is that as well as giving you potted information about sights and attractions they are very strong on historical and cultural contexts. This edition is a balanced overview of this fascinating country in which travelling can be truly exhilirating and occasionally irritating.

The introduction of the book gives you some 'must sees' and 'when to go' advice. For those interested in Northern India I would recommend travelling in November as flights are relatively cheap this time of year and the weather is hot but not unpleasant
