In my quest to read more work by Irish literary greats this year, I recently purchased a newly repackaged Penguin Popular Classic version of Oscar Wilde's 1895 play The Importance of Being Earnest. This edition, with its vibrant green cover and tracing-paper thin paper (all 100 per cent recycled), retails for a meagre £2 -- that's a very cheap price for a masterpiece, in my opinion.

I had seen a film version of this play a couple of years ago (the 2002 version starring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Frances O'Connor, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench) and I remember laughing out loud at a lot of it. But seeing the words in black-and-white print makes them seem even funnier -- if that is possible.

to the true genius of this man. He understood it like no other to capture the spirit of his century, to describe the true face of womanhood and to portrait society as a whole with all his flaws and good sides. Having only read his main oeuvre, i.e. The Picture of Dorian Gray, and few of his short stories, I could impossibly comment on his poetical work. Yet, his prose work identifies him as a true genius and the price of this book doesn't do justice to his life work. Still, to the morally flexible, lacking every sense of honor and respect for this man's art, I strongly advise the seize the occasion and order the book. It's a must-have.

This is an offset facsimile of the first printing published in 1899 in London by Leonard Smithers. According to his biographer, Richard Ellmann, Oscar Wilde worked on the design of this text himself.

The Orchises facsimile is printed on Ph balanced paper and is bound in full cloth in sewn signatures; although slightly reduced from the original in size, in most crucial respects it duplicates the original edition.

As a child, I was enchanted by this wonderful book. Now I have my own children, I am happy to be able to read it to them and they also love it. A selfish giant won't let any children play in his garden, until he meets a very special little boy.

Ultimately this is a Christian tale of love, forgiveness and redemption. It is very moving and the illustrations in this edition are beautiful. This is a story that will live on in your mind long after you have turned the last page.

a favorite of mine, although not quite as good as the importance of being earnest (a deceptively clever play) it is a play of a very different nature, both reviews of it on here i believe misrepresent it. although it is full of wilde's classic wit and there are many genuinely funny parts but it is not a pure comedy and it is also a significant drama. many see it as a fairly clear cut morality tale or at least having clear cut moral and immoral characters but it really isnt so simple. there is the duplicit nature of the characters and their actions, a slightly more complex moral commentary with none of the characters being as simple as they first appear. none of the characters in then play come off as good or bad the central ones all have the audience's ... This rating is only for the paperback version not the text itself. The quality of this version is so horrible that I can not even read it and have to buy the hardcover version. Don't make the same misstake I did!
