. Charley's War: 2 June-1 August 1916
by: Pat Mills, Joe Colquhoun
November 26, 2004
I am a huge fan of American comics in my early 20s, and stumbled upon this purely by chance, and it has truly opened up a new door for me for a genre that I previously had little interest in. Not just the war comic genre, but British comics in general.
Charley's War goes into territory I didn't realise comics could do. It seems so ahead of it's time, in an era when most comics were glamorising war this does not hold back on completely exposing the true horrors of war. Almost to the extent that it is hard to believe it was aimed at children.
People having their limbs blown off, choking to death on mustard gas, friends being stranded helplessly in no mans land and blown apart, betrayals, cheating, soldiers inner emotions ... Read More:

. Charley's War: 1 August-17 October 1916
by: Pat Mills, Joe Colquhoun

Carries on from the fantastic first volume - Charley's exploits are the essence of nostalgia for blokes of my age & this series of reprints of his WW1 exploits are a joy.
The art work & story telling, the detail & the nostalgia, just one great big bundle of pleasure for an ageing (& quite frankly, cynical & miserable) git like me - it makes me feel the worry free existence of being just a young lad, all over again.
As with the rest in the series, worth every penny, particularly if you enjoyed Charley's adventures first time around.

. Charley's War: Blue's Story v. 4 (Charley's War)
by: Pat Mills, Joe Colquhoun
October 26, 2007
Charley's War is certainly a classic British comic strip and has lots to recommend it. Unfortunately the downside to these lavish reprints comes with Pat Mill's commentaries. While they are interesting when he talks about the production of the strip they veer into unintended comedy when he begins his customary Left wing agit-prop ranting. Charley's War dates from a time early in Mills' carer when he still tried to write stories instead of crude political tracts and introducing the customary mix of paranoia and vanity which marks 70's left overs like him really spoils things.
Kudos to Pat though for consistently putting forward the name of Charley's War artist Joe Colquhoun as a forgotten master. His art IS amazing and accounts for more than the 50% of the success ... Read More:

. Charley's War: 17 October, 1916-21 February, 1917 (Charley's War)

I know lots of people rightly wax lyrical about this long-running strip. The artwork and the writng are first-class, and the duo behind Charley's War deserve full marks for getting such an 'anti-war' strip into a boys pro-war comic.
However, there's the rub. While masses of historical research went into it, the strip is definitely written from a left-wing perspective. If you've seen the play or film version of 'Oh What a Lovely War' you'll know what I mean.
Officers are almost always upper-class toffs - who dine on good food in comfortable dugouts or billets while their men shiver in the trenches. The few good officers there are, are either cut down by the Germans - or end up ruthlessly sacrificed by the 'political-military' elite. Clearly that's how some people ... Read More:
