City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Sheltering Sky (Penguin Red Classics)
.The Sheltering Sky (Penguin Red Classics)

by: Paul Bowles

January 26, 2006
The three main characters in this story are nicely drawn in the first few pages and we stay with them throughout their journey across a part of Africa. The mood is a brooding one and relationships are never quite what they seem. The African scene is very accurately represented with much filth, darkness and brooding uncertainty that matches what is going on between the characters.
I came to feel that the self obsession bordering on self pity of the married partners made them morally bankrupt and very unsympathetic characters. By the end I had a very precise picture of what I wanted to happen to them. It did..
Shame on me for not finding Bowles' work before now but better late than never.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : For Bread Alone
.For Bread Alone

by: Mohamed Choukri, Paul Bowles

June 22, 2006
If you are Moroccan or North African, you'll love this book. It was particularly eye-opening for me as a Moroccan born & bought up in London to read about the poverty and hardships Mohamed Choukri faced as a young man trying to find his way in Tangiers.

There are many funny parts to this book as well and you always have the feeling that he'll be alright.

I loved this book & have read it twice, its a book that makes me feel full of hope. Mohamed Choukri has come through these hardships, dealt with the death of his sisters, educated himself and is a great role-model for any young man in Morocco today.

I would strongly reccommend this book to anyone.

I can't agree with the hyped reviews of this book. I found it terribly tedious; had no interest in any of the characters at all. A big expectation drop after Bowles' ***** Sheltering Sky

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Midnight Mass (Peter Owen Modern Classic)
.Midnight Mass (Peter Owen Modern Classic)

by: Paul Bowles

March 28, 2000
Modern North African literature is regrettably very sparse on the ground compared to the more productive writings of central and South Africa and especially the Western world. This is why MM is such an eye opener in terms of culture. Although a self-confirmed bookworm this is the first contemporary book I can remember reading based on North African culture and society- and its insights are wonderful. Snakes, poison and food seem to be the three key elements of Bowles's work and the sense of place and purpose he creates is vivid and colourful.
However, Bowles not only succeeds in capturing the mythology and "feel" of his geographic area but also write with such verve and understanding about people and their dreams, desires and failings that you can't help being drawn into his world. ... Read More:
