. Sardinia (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Paula Hardy
May 01, 2006
Well, having returned from a two week tour of Sardinia, we feel rather let down by this lonely planet. This book provides some good historical information about the island, however it feels rather repetitive throughout and the space could be better used to provide travelers with the information that would improve their stay. Sardinia has some magnificent inland and coastal sights, towns, and places to stay, but the lonely planet took us to some areas of Sardinia which when we arrived, we sat wondering why the resort had been listed. We also found some absolute gems which were only mentioned in passing and had we not been willing to venture off the beaten track we would have missed them.
If you want a travel book which tells you ... Read More:

. Botswana and Namibia (Lonely Planet Multi Country Guide)
by: Paula Hardy, Matthew Firestone
February 01, 2007
I had access to the Footprint of Namibia as well as this Lonely Planet guide for the last 19 days in Namibia. Being an avid LP guide user for many years it was my first choice, but I have to say it was eclipsed by the Footprint guide, and a downright disappointment at times. So much information I looked for was either missing or worse, wrong. Given that it is a 2007 edition I was amazed to discover that a bridge built over the Zambezi in 2004/5 to access Zambia from Namibia was missing. LP stated there was still a ferry only across the river, and as a result I would have driven via Botswana and Zimbabwe instead had I not had the Footprint.
I have also decided I don't like the way they always quote prices in US dollars - why not in ... Read More:

. Italy (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:

. Sicily (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Paula Hardy
May 01, 2005
I've just returned from 5 days in Sicily, where I visited Erice, Agrigento and Palermo and some other parts of the west coast.
For these areas, I found the book very useful and informative, in particular the Palermo section. As usual it was set out well and was easily to use. I imagine the other sections are just as useful.
The only thing it didn't mention was that while it might be the best beach in Sicily, the rocks behind are yielded some of our major break throughs in understanding climate change!
I would reccomend this book and prefer the layout to the rough guides I have used for other places in the past

. Morocco (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Heidi Edsall, Paula Hardy, Mara Vorhees

Went to Morocco for 2 weeks.
Went to Tangier, Chefchouan, Fez, Meknes and Asila.
We wanted to avoid Marrakesh and the more touristy areas.
This book was invaluable the whole time.
Everything from hints, tips, language right through to the history.
Even when we went out of the city of Meknes to Taza where there were some massive caves, we were in the middle of no where and still the guide came in useful. Actually the owner of the caves happily pointed out his name in our book. The LP researcher obviously spoke to this guy who'd been running the caves for ages!
We will definitly be using it again.
If yer going to Morocco. You need only this book.

. Andalucia (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Susan Forsyth, Paula Hardy, John Noble
January 01, 2005
Despite an unusually high number of flaws, this is nevertheless a book that will help you get the most out of your time in Andalucia.
Perhaps I just expect too much of Lonely Planet (LP), but it's their own fault. They've stood by me so many times in so many different places in the past that I was beginning to take everything they told me as The Only Advice In Town. So when I arrived in Seville I quickly got into the LP groove and hit La Bella Estrella, a "jazz bar".
Well, perhaps I'd arrived the day they buried the proprietor, but there was no jazz going on there, so off I went to Naima Café Jazz, happily only about five doors away down Calle Trajan. A bit better, but still not the place I expected based on ... Read More:
