Almost essential during any trip to Ghana, this guide really makes it easy to locate the wealth of culture and hospitality in Ghana.

Without a guide Ghana can oft times seem at best daunting and at worst dull. This is far from the truth however, the country containing almost all of what Africa has to offer - Rainforests, Christian & Muslim Cultures, Safaris, Beautiful lakes and beaches and even *cough* the corrupting influences of the west are detailed in extraordinary depth within this guide.

I've never come across such a brilliant guidebook as this for any country I've been to. Not only is it highly informative, dependable and up to date, as you would expect, but it is also very readable. Mr Briggs' writing style demonstrates a real affection for the country which you will hopefully share by the end of your stay. We certainly did.

Good guide book with added bonus of helping the traveller escape the LP hordes. Having lived in Malawi I found it better than most other guide books covering most places I visited. All in all perfect for exploring a fabulous country and meeting it's friendly people.

The only alternative to the Bradt guide is a tiny chapter in Lonely Planet's East Africa guide which doesn't even compare.
The first half of the book goes into the history, (both natural and human) and cultural, travel and other issues that a traveller needs to know. The second half is the guide-book and combines useful information for travellers such as where to eat, sleep and how to get around, with good accuracy. It also has a fantastic feature of articles of interest throughout the book to add colour and detail to every stop.
Prices are now a little out of date, but otherwise great. Get it before hand and read the mine of information it holds.

My family has returned from visiting Northern Tanzania and we found this guide to be useful for the mainland safari but grossly misrepresentative of our experiences in the Stone Town, dolphin watching in Kizimkazi (using Fisherman Tours, as booked at Breezes Beach Club) and at Zanzibar International Airport.

We were expecting the Stone Town to be somewhat like Venice, with architecture from India, Persia and Arabia. It can best be described as hot, seedy and incredibly unhygienic (particularly the market). The narrow streets have motorcycles constantly trying to pass you and there are many power cables strewn overhead.

A great book with lots of practical info that helped get me around Ghana for three months. A travel guide will not replace personal advise but I couldn't imagine a better travel guide than this. I rarely found myself doing things or going to places that weren't in the book, and if they were to go in the book, the book would be impractically long. In 2003 everyone told me this was the best guide. My advise would be to get a map or two, especially for the cities as there is only the bare essentials of mapping here as with all travel books.
