.Y: The Last Man: Whys and Wherefores: 10

This is the culmination to a good series, always interesting, although - like the TV series the writer is now involved with - not every "episode" is a strong one.

I expect, if the US TV networks will buy a series with only one male character, this will be a TV series soon, hailed by all as the new Lost or Heroes.

Publication was delayed - by the publisher, not Amazon - and, like another reviewer, my copy has 20 pages printed upside-down, but these minor irritations aside it is a good finale with shocks, surprises and a satisfying ending for all the story lines. No hanging threats of further issues, thankfully.

When reading a long graphic novel series you have to usually remember that for the most part they get better as they go along. The first volume will lay the groundwork and this will often lead many to say that a comic is boring.

Y The Last Man Vol 1 is good enough to make you want to read the next one but has some serious flaws. For starters women are portrayed as rather one dimensional and Yorick can be a little annoying in his single minded attempt to get to his girlfriend when humanity is obviously in danger. On saying that
I raced through this book and while I did find it annoying in parts it is a good start and I will be picking up Volume 2.

I was a bit critical of Vol 1 but vol 2 is much much better. The foundations are all laid down and this is just a real page turner. Yorick is much more likeable in this vol. The interplay between Yorick and his sister is pretty interesting and I am excited to see how this turns out. When you finish this I was desperate to read Vol 3. The art is ok, nothing spectacular but serves its purpose.

This is the best book of the Y The Last Man series yet. The first 4 have been excellent, but this tops them all. It ties up loose ends (why has Yorrick survived the plauge? Who was that ninja he saw in volume 3?) and then leaves you with some new questions, such as: Can Hero be trusted? Can we believe Agent 355? If you've been a half hearted follower so far, this will make you a full on fan.

Anyone who says comics are for kids should read this and realise that they are wrong.

I don't know why people aren't satisfied with Vaughan's explanation, if you ask me this book is a big improvement over the last volume. The whole Y journey is fantastic and this is no exception.

If you've got to volume 8, you have to read this one, so it makes criticism kind of moot. But it's not as bad as others are saying, in fact the writing here is as entertaining as any of the other volumes, whether you like the final explanation or not.
