. Jams and Chutneys: Preserving the Harvest, Over 150 Recipes
by: Thane Prince
June 02, 2008
September is the traditional time for dealing with summer's glut in preparation for winter's leaner months. As Thane Prince in Jams & Chutneys - Preserving the Harvest points out, it wasn't so long ago that "preserving nature's bounty was a necessity rather than an indulgence" so every prudent housewife (and I use the description advisedly) would beaver away bottling, pickling, making jam and so on.
Even if your need to preserve has died away and your "consumption lags far behind production levels" Thane wants you to keep at it. She believes preserving is "a truly life-enhancing experience" and although this may sound a little OTT, I can vouch for that. For years I made marmalade with my friend Michele. Never ate the stuff but ... Read More:

. Banker to the Poor: The Story of the Grameen Bank
by: Mohammad Yunus, Alan Jolis
July 11, 2003
This is the book that made me want to know more about microfinance, I found it very inspiring and Dr Yunus became my personal hero.
I then learned more about microfinance, talked to senior microfinance experts, and even though microfinance is indeed a powerfull tool to fight poverty, it is not the panacea it sometimes claims to be.
Microfinance can have a negative impact on social fabric, increasing tensions inside communities, it can also be used by governments of developping countries as a way to privatise social welfare, typically after massive lay-offs from the private sector(why spend public money on unemployment benefits, minimum wage, let's bring microfinance instead to help the poor..).
I don't mean to sound cynical or disillusioned, ... Read More:

. The Savvy Shopper
by: Rose Prince
May 02, 2006
I originally borrowed this from my local library, but found it so useful that I bought my own copy.
When shopping for food in supermarkets, I try to go for companies that produce food that tastes of something, (which tend to be smaller companies listed in this book), rather than the bland offerings from the usual manufacturers, who tend to be the biggest polluters and wasters of produce/energy etc.
I try and avoid companies that overpackage their products as well. Layers of card and plastic may look nice, but add nothing to the contents.
Remember when apples actually tasted of something? This book will help you find them or even the seeds if you grown your own.
Recommended read.
