.Essential Bushcraft

Having been very disappointed by Ray Mears 'Bushcraft Survival', I was pleased to have purchased this book. It covers everything that a novice woodsman like myself would need to know. I was very impressed with the section on building shelter. Nice and easy to follow. A good buy in my opinion.

I am a huge Ray Mears fan and have all his books so far. I was impressed with the overall knowledge passed on in this book but was dissappointed in the fact it is clearly written more by Gordon than Ray and as such does not have enough detail about cooking and preparation in my opinion. Its clearly a lifetimes work in reference format but not a classic Ray Mears book by any means.

I wrote to the publisher and Ray Mears company to complain about the editing but got nowhere.

I wouldnt buy this book, and I will be closely looking at future purchases from this publisher.

.Animal Tracks and Signs (Pocket Nature Guide)

As a mammal ecologist, I'm pretty familiar with feeding signs of rodents and also mammal footprints, and general identification... So it is probably quite natural that I'm a bit over-sensitive to things lost in translation. In general, this is a fantastic book, and I will take it with me on any "outing"... but there are a few errors...

On page 67 the photo in the centre at the bottom of the page says it is a fox print. I am familiar with the technique of putting a line, or an "x" through a track to determine if it is a fox or dog. They mention it above, on the very same page, but the one in the photo doesn't seem to fall in line with my (or their) criteria for a fox track.

With all due respect to Ray Mears, who has proved beyond all doubt that he is an expert in Bushcraft and Survival, this book was not what I wanted. It is simply the story of Ray and the different people and cultures he encountered on his travells. There are one or two little tips that could be taken from this book, but if its Bushcraft and Survival skills you are interested in, save your money. Ray has written Other books that are far more appropriate for that.

Having always regarded Ray Mears as an overgrown boy scout I started to read the book with some apprehension (why did his chubby face have to feature on the cover?) However after the first few lines I was hooked on the story of these true heroes. Mears gives a superb, detailed account of the build-up and action in destroying the heavy water stocks held by the Nazis at Rjukan. The account of the second, possibly more important operation, to destroy the ship that would transport the replenished Heavy Water stock to Germany seemed a little rushed and not so detailed, but I guess he was limited to the size of the paperback. In my opinion a book not to miss!
