. Those Terrible Middle Ages!: Debunking the Myths
by: Regine Pernoud
2000-03
In this book Regine Pernoud briskly disposes of the myths about the MiddleAges. She vigorously attacks the notion that the people of medieval timeswere ignorant and credulous compared to those who came after in theso-called 'Renaissance'. She shows how untrue it is that medieval peoplewere ignorant of classical learning, that on the contrary the were wellacquainted with the ancient writers, but unlike the people of the'REnaissance' did not feel a need to copy them slavishly. We learn alsothat much of what is believed about the medieval peasants is untrue, theywer not nearly as oppressed as they became in later centuries. The chapterabout medieval women is particularly interesting, Regine Pernoud discussesthe powerful and influential women ... Read More:

. Joan of Arc: Her Story
by: Regine Pernoud, Marie-Veronique Clin
1999-01
I think it wise for anyone who reads this book to begin with the prefaces which give a clue to the overall presentation of the book. I did find myself captivated by the book upon first reading. And though it is easy for us to become lost in the maze of characters involved in St. Joan's life, a testament of how many she affected in the brief time she was alive, there are the second and third parts to enlighten us. The book does well with the presentation of her life. Further, there is plenty of information in the appendices to give someone not familiar with the "life and times" of the late Medieval Age to come away with enough background to have a better understanding of the events that unfold in this book. More interesting ... Read More:

. Joan Of Arc
by: Regine Pernoud
July 20, 2000
Of the four histories I have read on Joan of Arc this is by far the most scholarly, accurate and readable account. Pernoud is a well respected medieval historian and she was always rigorous about using accurate primary sources wherever possible. The first seven chapters present her short life as seen from the surprisingly varied primary sources available. All of the myth and fake religious/spiritual nonsense that has unfortunately been linked to Joan since her death is stripped away and we get a very detailed view of a quite capable and determined country girl whose destiny played out amidst the insecurity and chaos of wartorn France. There are biographies of all of the main characters involved in her story. A full account of her trial and numerous other useful ... Read More:

. Eleanor of Aquitaine
by: Regine Pernoud
1967
Regine Pernoud may have written the best modern historical biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Pernoud was born at Chateau Chinon, which Eleanor and Henry II knew well. The castle at Chinon served as a treasury for Henry, who died there, and for the couple's son, Richard the Lionheart.
Pernoud died in 1998, a noted historian, medievalist and archivist at France's National Archives, where she was responsible for developing the Museum of History of France. She wrote two definitive books about Joan of Arc and others about women closer to Eleanor's time: "Hildegarde de Bingen," "Blanche of Castile" (Eleanor's granddaughter), "Women at the time of the crusades" and "Women in the Days of the Cathedrals."
Pernoud left us a wonderfully perceptive biography. In ... Read More:
