We are going to walk the inca trail later this year, and have so far found this book great, although there are only a handful of photos. If we want to know anything we turn to our little guide. So far I've looked up advice on what innoculations you need, what to watch out for with insurance, altitude sickness, what to pack, the route and maps, and i've hardly explored this little book that's as big as my hand.

. The Inca Trail: Cuzco and Machu Picchu (Peru Trekking Guides)
by: Richard Danbury
1999-05
How I wish this book had been published 10 years earlier! I have hiked the Inca Trail twice; first in 1989 and then again in 1997. Both times were immensely enjoyable but the first time I wasn't really sure what to expect, despite having read what I could about the country, and in some ways was not very well prepared. In just over 250 pages it contains a great deal of information not only about the Inca Trail itself but also the whole of the Cuzco/Sacred Valley area as well as background information on Inca history, modern Peru, and practical advice for travellers. In addition to the classic Inca Trail the book covers the more recently ... Read More:

. Chile: The Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
by: Melissa Graham, Christopher Sainsbury, Richard Danbury
October 28, 1999
This is could be a very useful guide BUT we found both the accommodation infos and the maps EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE. Hostels are likely to either no longer exist or to differ strongly from the descriptions provided. If the guide says that a hostel is "not so nice", read that as a clear "stay away, this place is a dump". You can spare yourself some horrid nights that way. Just ask other people where they stayed and write it down in a notebook. We found the city maps simply abysmal. Entire blocks and streets were missing from the map of Osorno, which led to an hour long trek across town, whereas the map showed that our accommodation was just two blocks away from the Plaza da Armas. Having said that, RG is definitely better than LG, which seems to consist of ... Read More:
