. The Siege of Derry, 1689: The Military History
by: Richard Doherty
June 16, 2008
What a delightful book. This makes very good reading in addition to being very good history. The author combines first-rate research skills with a fluent pen and the result is that relative rarum avis, a highly readable history book. It also benefits from a mass of clear illustrations and some very good maps, although I think that Wexford is shown in the wrong place.
Having read this book I will certainly be making a trip to the siege city to walk the walls, visit the cathedral and drink in some of the atmosphere that comes across so well from these pages.
Spellmount books are always good quality. This is no exception from the eyecatching jacket design to the paper used throughout.
Worth the money and worth reading again. ... Read More:

. The British Reconnaissance Corps in World War II (Elite)
by: Richard Doherty
March 10, 2007
This is the book that the Highland Division deserved. They were outstanding soldiers, probably the best British infantry division of the Second World War, and the author has done them full justice in this excellent account.
As well as being very well researched - look at the many notes to each chapter - None Bolder is also very well written. Doherty has a flair for good writing and it shows throughout this book.
I recommend wholeheartedly this volume to anyone with an interest in the British Army of the Second World War. My only problem with it is actually finding a copy in Ireland - mine was bought in London. But there were many Irishmen in the division and there should be a market here as well.

. Normandy 1944: The Road to Victory
by: Richard Doherty
June 21, 2004
This book is really badly titled. It should be 'Normandy 1944 - The British, Irish and Canadian campaign'. If the fighting of those later armies is thoroughly described, mention of Omaha, Utah, the 101st airborne, etc. is scarce. I think it is only fair if D-Day by S. E. Ambrose gets only 1 star for failing to acknowledge the British contribution to the campaign to give also 1 star to this book for making the same mistake (only the other way round).
I paid some hard earned cash to read about the whole campaign. I did not buy Ambrose's book because of the reviews of unfair treatment but those for that book made me waste my money.

. Eighth Army in Italy 1943-45: The Long Hard Slog
by: Richard Doherty
October 18, 2007
Typical of this author, this book is exceptionally well written and exhaustively researched. It tells the story of Britain's most famous field army of the 20th century in the Italian campaign that lasted from September 1943 until May 1945. There's no doubt that Doherty knows the British Army of the Second World War as well as anybody and he seems to have a special affinity with the Italian campaign. This book is enlightening on the difficulties of the campaign, so different from that in the Desert where Eighth Army was born, and of the qualities of the generals who commanded the Army. Montgomery was the best known but the author argues that the best of the three commanders in Italy was the last, Sir Richard McCreery. Having read this book I'm inclined ... Read More:

. The North Irish Horse: A Hundred Years of Service
by: Richard Doherty
February 17, 2003
This is an excellent book. To anyone interested in the history of the Second World War, which is my main area of interest, I say 'buy it'. It's excellent on the Italian campaign on which the author is an authority. The regiment also served in Tunisia and this section is especially good. During the Great War this unit saw a variety of service. It was a divisional, then corps, cavalry regiment and was later converted to a cyclist unit, which placed it in a recce role. There's much facintating information on this period. The book also includes the story of the regiment between the wars and since 1947 when it was re-formed in the TA. A Roll of Honour and details of decorations and awards set off this exemplary ... Read More:
