City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy 1943-44
.The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy 1943-44

by: Rick Atkinson

October 18, 2007
I bought Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn" (which follows the North African campaign from Operation Torch to Tunis) and, like many people, have been eagerly awaiting his newest book which covers Sicily and Italy.

The book rumbles from one end of Italy to the other, following the campaign in detail, with clear maps and some excellent photos. It being primarily a book about the American fighting in Italy, non-American units are sidelined in that the level of detail devoted to them is far less. Atkinson's writing style is at times florid but he never fails to point out the brutality, the humanity and the sacrifice.

There are minor errors scattered through the book, which an editor with a comprehensive knowledge of ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War
.Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War

by: Rick Atkinson

October 30, 1995
13 years and two Administrations ago, the entire world watched as the first President Bush marshaled a global coalition to confront Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and gave him an ultimatum: leave Kuwait by Jan. 15, 1991, or we'll force you out. Three months had passed since Iraq had invaded its tiny but rich neighbor, claiming the Kuwaitis were slant-drilling into Iraqi oil fields just across the border.

In reality, as Rick Atkinson points out in Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War, Saddam was strong-arming his way out of repaying loans made to Iraq by Kuwait and other moderate Arab countries during his disastrous war with Iran. He may have also been angered by OPEC's lowering of the price of crude oil, which reduced badly-needed ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Long Gray Line: The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966
.The Long Gray Line: The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966

by: Rick Atkinson

1999-10
How Rick Atkinson wrote this book without being a graduate of the West Point class of 66 himself is beyond me!

Leaving no stone unturned he brings the group of men starting at the USMA in 1962 to life, regaling us with a story that covers some turbulent times in the US military as seen through the eyes of those that lived, and led, through it.

Some of the anecdotes amuse, others almost bring you to tears such as the incident involving a tree on the border between South and North Korea. This is one of the finest books I've read - I wish there was an updated version which allows us to see where the class of 66 is now, as I know of at least one of the graduates who has achieved two star rank and is one of the leaders of the US Army through ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Of Dogs and Men: Fifty Years in the Antarctic
.Of Dogs and Men: Fifty Years in the Antarctic

by: Kevin;Atkinson, Rick Walton

1995
This account by Kevin Walton and Rick Atkinson brings to life the amazing world of Antarctica as seen through the eyes of the men of the British Antarctic Survey who were lucky enough to be there when dogs were the prime mode of transport. The reader gets to know some of the dogs and to wonder at the feats accomplished by them. The photography is superb and the text very readable. Factual and down-to-earth, with quotes and photos from many participants spanning the fifty years of dogs in the South. Great!
