.Rick Steves' Paris 2008 (Rick Steves) by: Rick Steves, Steve Smith, and Gene Openshaw September 21, 2007 Although this book has the basics of a good guide book, the necessary maps and extensive descriptions of the major sights, it lacks too much to be above average. Why are sights like Hotel de Ville and Jardin des Tuileres not discussed? (I had to ask my travel companion - with Lonely Planet - for a description) Further, the books seems to be written for US residents only; how to travel, local resources, etc. is solely about the US. Annoying is the pronunciation helps after almost every French word ("see voo play") and the following comment about the Babylonian empire, as background information on art in the Louvre; "...peace, prosperity, and democracy were established for all time in Iraq by the United States of America under the benevolent guidance ... .Rick Steves' Italian Phrase Book and Dictionary (Rick Steves' Phrase Books) by: Rick Steves July 25, 2003 Have used the book several times in Italy now, and it has been a great help. The phonetic spelling assists greatly when ordering at a non-english speaking restaurant for instance. We also had our hotel staff in stitches laughing at some of the 'slang' or more real world phrases we used that are listed in the book, that rarely appear in phrase books. Could be particularly useful for women travelling alone in Italy where 'get lost' and 'drop dead' may come in handy..
