We recently made our first trip to Mauritius, armed with a number of travel guides. Lonely Planet's guide was consistently helpful: we knew what to expect, and were provided with a series of tips to get the most from every place we visited.

We had also used it to decide which hotel to stay in before making the trip, and again, it helped us make the right decision according to our budget.

There aren't many photos in the book, which is my only criticism, and is the only reason we felt it necessary to buy other guides - a picture speaks a thousand words, after all. Nevertheless, after a couple of days in resort, this was the only book we used, and I heartily recommend it to anyone even considering a trip to Mauritius.

The second (October 2006) edition of Tibet, the Bradt Travel Guide, is a welcome updating and expansion of the guidebook first published three years ago.

Michael Buckley has been writing guidebooks to Tibet for over twenty years, and brings a thoughtful maturity to the subject that is distinctive and invaluable.

I would recommend this book as the first and best to read before a visit to Tibet.

We recently made our first trip to Mauritius, armed with a number of travel guides. Lonely Planet's guide was consistently helpful: we knew what to expect, and were provided with a series of tips to get the most from every place we visited.

There aren't many photos in the book, which is my only criticism, and is the only reason we felt it necessary to buy other guides - a picture speaks a thousand words, after all. Nevertheless, after a couple of days in resort, this was the only book we used, and I heartily recommend it to anyone even considering a trip to Mauritius.

I recently used the Lonely Planet Guide in Japan, for a first-time visit. I can't read any Japanese or speak any. Without the Lonely Planet I wouldn't have found any interesting accommodation, nor some great places to visit (notably a Buddhist temple where I stayed). So for helping me out with the itinerary alone, it was well worth it.
It does a reasonable job of explaining things like how the train system works, how to get from A to B and certain aspects of Japanese culture. I found the maps of Kyoto difficult because they unhelpfully divided the city up (and they didn't tally straightforwardly with other maps from the tourist office). The real limitation, for me, is that to get around in Japan you need to recognise things visually because ... Read More:
