I bought it to boost my confidence (as suggested by a reviewer)and it looked like a good buy for the price (quite cheap)but the pictures were too small and my clinical tutor says some of the techniques are not really recommended (and old fashiond).

I've found the use of characters to facilitate learning particularly appealing. There's PC Page - he works alongside children to develop their literal comprehension. The higher ranking `Text Detective' guides children through the higher order skills: inference, deduction and evaluation.

Quick Fix For Year 6: Comprehension doesn't just teach children to jump through SATs hoops. The learning activities encourage children to know the difference between types of questions and, most impressively, teach children how to generate their own questions. There's no place for passive learning here! My class have thoroughly enjoyed the activities and I have been so impressed with their deeper understanding of comprehension.

As a Primary school teacher, I have found this book to be an excellent resource and a 'must have' during story writing sessions. The illustrations are of a high standard, and the variety of pictures enable the children to form ideas of their own.

Each double page features a particular sort of non-fiction writing, eg instructions, recipes, newspaper reports. Each page contains an example and then an activity for the children to complete. Although book is sold as 'non fiction' writing, most of the activities are based on fictional stories or characters, eg the newspaper report asks the children to write an account of an event from a fairy tale, eg the Queen's tarts being stolen; the recipe shows a snack for giants and asks the children to create a meal for a dragon.
