.India (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...

There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.

Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.

I'd bought my flight tickets, travel insurance and the all important Visa for entering India. Next on the list was the guide book. It was a choice of this one or the Rough Guide.

Both were published around the same time, and I've used both before for different countries, so I'm happy with their layout and content. However, choosing the right guide this time seemed far more difficult.

Both contained detailed information about the places I plan to visit. However, I found some bits were present in one book, but not the other, and vice-versa. In the end I decided to go for both books. I'm travelling in South India for 3 months, so I thought it would be worth the luxury of having two guides.

.Lonely Planet : Mauritius, Reunion & Seychelles

We recently made our first trip to Mauritius, armed with a number of travel guides. Lonely Planet's guide was consistently helpful: we knew what to expect, and were provided with a series of tips to get the most from every place we visited.

We had also used it to decide which hotel to stay in before making the trip, and again, it helped us make the right decision according to our budget.

There aren't many photos in the book, which is my only criticism, and is the only reason we felt it necessary to buy other guides - a picture speaks a thousand words, after all. Nevertheless, after a couple of days in resort, this was the only book we used, and I heartily recommend it to anyone even considering a trip to Mauritius.

Many visitors to Australia will clutch their trusty Rough Guide or Lonely Planet, but neither will give you an insight into one of the worlds oldest civilisations in quite the way this book does. Go without it and you could miss the indigiounous Australia right under your nose.

It covers aspects of Australia in much the same way to other guidebooks, divided into regions and outlining history, geography, tours, shops and sights to visit in that area. It features sacred sites, information tours, festivals and shops run by aboriginals selling genuine arts and crafts, rather than the gaudy mass produced digeridoos or boomerangs seen elsewhere.

As with all the Lonely Planet books, this book is excellent. It is lighter than the main India Lonely planet, and still contains everything you need to know for travelling to India. It also contains handy chapters on Delhi and Agra (Taj Mahal) which most travellers in this area are likely to visit, although they are not technically in Rajasthan. Don't go without it!

NB: EVERY traveller in this area has the general 'India' LP book, the Rajasthan guide will give you more detailed info and therefore may contain sights etc otherwise unknown to the average traveller.

As with all the Lonely Planet books, this book is excellent. It is lighter than the main India Lonely planet, and still contains everything you need to know for travelling to India. It also contains handy chapters on Delhi and Agra (Taj Mahal) which most travellers in this area are likely to visit, although they are not technically in Rajasthan. Don't go without it!
