. Made in Italy: Food & Stories
by: Giorgio Locatelli, Sheila Keating
2007-11
I bought this book on a whim whilst on holiday and now find myself reading it from cover to cover. The whole concept is to put the food and the chef in context; the book reads like no other cookery book I have come across. A whole range of ingredients are explained in short essays throughout the book (eg olives, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, parmesan etc). The recipes are split into starters, soups, risotto, fish, meat, pasta and deserts. In amongst the essays and recipes are wonderful photographs and short autobiographical vignettes from Locatelli.
I also have the excellent 'Sliver Spoon', but it is eclipsed by 'Made in Italy'. The former is a huge repository of recipes, listed in exhaustive detail. Locatelli's book on the other ... Read More:

. Your Place or Mine: Cooking at Home With Restaurant Style
by: Jean-Christoph Novelli, Jean Christophe Novelli, Sheila Keating, Jean Cazals
1999-06
In the halcyon days of Maison Novelli, Clerkenwell, a good meal there opened my eyes and taste buds to sauce making. Sometime later I purchased the proprietor's glitzy and fairly expensive! book. I had a flick through it noting the good quality photography, glanced at a few dishes and put it to one side. It initially struck me as a rather thin, insubstantial affair and it took sometime for me to come back to it. I then started trying some of the recipes...
The recipes are rarely quick affairs, they tend to require a lot of preparation, some of the components are often best prepared ahead of time. When you get the recipes right and everything comes together, these dishes are fantastic. I'm sure others were doing it before, and many ... Read More:

. A Detective in Love: Complete & Unabridged
by: H.R.F. Keating
2002-07
A Detective in Love is the sixth in the series featuring a detective afflicted by a particular human weakness which threatens their work and even their whole future. This time as the title suggests, an unexpected bolt-from-the-blue, tossed down nonchalantly by Eros, the god of love, is the root of the problem. Disquieting and sometimes disturbing influences permeate the story, since to a greater or lesser degree, the thoughts, words and actions of just about everyone in it are influenced by the sex-drive. Even the murder weapon is a parody of Cupid's dart. Initially, it was distracting to have Eros & Aphrodite interfering with the development of the mystery, then as the story unfolded, the mystery started getting in the way ... Read More:
