. The Yellow Dog (Penguin Red Classics)
by: Georges Simenon
August 31, 2006
Georges Simenon was the author of over 100 Inspector Maigret mystery stories. They were immensely popular in the 1930s through the 1960s. Inspector Maigret stories also appeared in film and TV version. Simenon and Maigret seem to have fallen under the radar in recent decades but in recent years he seems to have been rediscovered by a new generation of mystery/detective story fans. Penguin Books has begun to reissue some of those Maigret mysteries and the New York Review of Books Press has reissued some of his `hard stories', stories that did not feature Inspector Maigret. Simenon's Inspector Maigret Mystery, "The Yellow Dog" was a fun book to read and is as good a place to start for anyone wishing t discover (or re-read) Simenon.

. The Man Who Watched the Trains Go By (Penguin Red Classics)
by: Georges Simenon
June 29, 2006
I agree fully with the previous two reviewers. This in my view is a masterpiece. Engrossing , terrifying, intriguing, the descent into crime and madness of an apparently solid middle-class citizen is so plausibly chronicled that I think the events have implications for everyone.
The style is economical and matter-of-fact, and not a word is wasted. The events are laid out in front of the reader who makes what he or he can of them, and every interpretation is likely to be a disturbing one. A great thriller, a great horror story and a great examination of the contemporary world.
Thge Maigret stories are very good, in my opinion, but the "hard novels" of Simenon are in a higher category altogether - if you like this one ... Read More:

Georges Simenon was the author of over 100 Inspect Maigret mystery stories. They were immensely popular in the 1930s through the 1960s but seem to have fallen out of view in the last few decades. Penguin Books has begun to reissue some of those mysteries. They are all fun books to read and Simenon's "Lock 14" is no exception.
Originally published in 1931, Lock 14 is set in a canal in France at a time when commercial barge traffic was a primary means of transporting cargo. The canals were filled with a mix of commercial and tourist traffic which effectively created a mix of upper and working class personalities. Lock 14 begins, as most such mysteries do, with a dead body. A young woman is found dead in a pile of muck, murdered in a stable ... Read More:

. Maigret and the Wine Merchant
by: Georges Simenon
2005-12
This late Maigret novel, written in 1969, has the venerable commissaire somewhat nonplussed by the mores of the people he's investigating. The wine merchant of the title is the corpse in the case, and a nasty piece of work he turns out to have been. Not for the first time in Simenon, it is easier for both the policeman and the reader to empathise with the killer than with the victim. Nonetheless, justice must be done.
Simenon didn't write Christie-style whodunnits where everyone is gathered in the library for the big dénoument. Sometimes Maigret is able to close the case because an eye-witness is found; sometimes an anonymous informant provides vital information; sometimes the killer chooses to give himself up. What keeps me coming back to ... Read More:

. The Friend of Madame Maigret (Penguin Red Classics)
by: Georges Simenon
April 26, 2007
I was first introduced to Maigret in 1972, when I used to have to read them in French at school. Despite that introduction I still found them interesting enough to seek out English versions to read - an altogether much quicker and less painful approach!
What I love about Georges Simenon is his descriptive powers, so much so that you can really visualise the zinc topped cafe and its enticing aroma of coffee and the taste of the buttery couissants. You can smell his pipe smoke and ponder health and safety issues, whilst wondering how Maigret ever managed to work effectively after the large lunch and all that wine!
At 160 pages long, you are not going to get a massive plot and millions of characters, but it's a good read for the train, ... Read More:
