What a splendid reference book. Naturally I was thrilled to see several parish churches of mine included...

Simon Jenkins' reviews are spot on, the pictures detailed, the reviews wordy without loosing the reader or being patronising. Often when I've passed a church on a train, or am going to a particular part of the country, I check to see whether there is anything of interest, and I'm often surprised to find out the most bizarre facts!

Simon Jenkins, past editor of The Times and the Evening Standard, has written a fascinating book on Thatcherism which, he observes, is not a style of leadership but a political direction. He claims that Blair and Brown are its `willing prisoners'.

Thatcher attacked all workers and all professions - doctors, nurses, teachers, judges, steelworkers, police and miners. She stripped local government and the civil service of their independence and democracy.

Since 1990 we have suffered Thatcherism without Thatcher. Jenkins shows how Major and Blair continued Thatcher's policies across the board. He calls Blair `Thatcher's most devoted follower', but he makes a very strong case that Brown is even more so.

This is a beatifully illustrated and brilliantly-written guide to England's best houses. Navigation is made easy through the useful organisation of the entries by county, and the excellent index and contents pages. Another nice feature is the ratings, where houses are given stars out of five, as if they were films, albums or books. These critical reviews are unfailingly objective and reliable, too.

The book doesn't just cover houses open to the general public (for example, Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire) and also covers such things as the occasional ruined castle (for example, Brougham Castle in Cumbria). In fact, what it does and doesn't cover is probably the only weakness of the book, becasue it seems a little random at times.

One can almost feel himself in the ships ongoing to the South Atlantic, on the battlefields of the Falklands or in the corridors of power, witnessing the political maneuvering.Of course it is written strictly on the british perspective of the conflict, but apart from that is a great piece of work.

highly highly recommend this, i have real probs with understanding the OT and this helped more than i can say...i am currently reading another book on the OT and it's so heavy and dry i can only stand one chapter at a time, yet it says basically nothing different from this which is really funny and cute A* top banana
