.Collins Complete Artist's Manual

The previous reviewer referred to this book as his 'bible' - which is my name for it too. I bought The Artist's Manual when I took up oil painting, because it provided the best answers to all my questions (specialist oil painting books mainly contained step-by-step painting instructions, but not much fundamental information). I now own two copies: one for my studio and one to take with me when I teach.

Every aspect of drawing and painting is dealt with in depth, but always on a general level, without bias towards a particular style. This manual helps you get the best out of your materials by explaining how they function; advises how to remedy common mistakes; and also provides a good range of quality artworks for illustration. A great book that proved to be an invaluable start point for many of the topics on my Marine Biology degree. The process and systems sections were particularly helpful. The information was presented in a clear and easy to understand way and the diagrams/photos really helped with the explanations. Well worth the money.

A great book that proved to be an invaluable start point for many of the topics on my Marine Biology degree. The process and systems sections were particularly helpful. The information was presented in a clear and easy to understand way and the diagrams/photos really helped with the explanations. Well worth the money.

I am a design and teachnology teacher and wanted a resource to encourage my pupils to carry out research. This book explains everything in great detail and has step by step images of how to create various joining methods and the tools needed to create them. It has a clear section on timbers detailing where they can be found and working properties, listined under hard and softwood headings with clear pictures of each.
I would recommend this publication as one of the best reference materials I have ever bought.....excellent!!

I became interested in marine ecology and fisheries management on a trip to BC to see bears, and was looking for a way to follow it up. I have a background in aeronautical engineering and computing, so the mathematical modelling approaches are interesting (and well referenced if you wish to follow up). The book is presenting an overview of the industry in general, and methods of estimating populations, and also looking at the behaviour of fishermen - which the EEC CFP seems to overlook (much as the CAP is seen as something to be worked around by farmers, and bonus payments by the shop floor in a factory). It would be interesting to see an expert review, but the book does seem complete and well balanced on a contentious area of conservation.
