. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Penguin Popular Classics)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
July 28, 1994
What can I write about this book that hasn't been said or written yet? Everybody knows everything about its plot and its characters, so I'll better write about what this book means to me.
I started reading when I was four. When I was a child, my family spent the summer in the country, and in few years I had read all the children's books that we had there. So,when I was seven I decided to explore my father's library: since I wasn't allowed to climb on a ladder (nor did I dare to), I took the first book I reached. Yes, it was The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I won't pretend I understood everything I read there, but enough to make me want to read more. With the years I learned to love both Sherlock Holmes and its adventures. And ... Read More:

. The Speckled Band (Travelman Crime)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
July 01, 1998
When a frightened and desperate young woman enters Sherlock Holmes' sitting room, he refuses to dismiss her fears. Two years ago, Miss Helen Stoner's sister Julia had died under mysterious circumstances, after having heard a mysterious whistling in the night. And now, just when she is soon to be married, Helen is hearing the same whistling! Miss Stoner's step-father is a brute and a scoundrel, but is he up to something even more sinister? The game is indeed afoot! First published in Strand Magazine in February, 1892, this is a fun and exciting Holmesian mystery. As the story unfolds, it quickly becomes clear who the villain of the story is, but what is he doing and how? Also, there are a few mistakes made with the story (there is no such ... Read More:

. The Hound of the Baskervilles
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
December 01, 1999
The image of Sherlock Holmes in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' is perhaps the most enduring image we have of him. You see, an Inverness cloak and deerstalker cap are inappropriate wardrobe for the town, and belong in the country. Sherlock Holmes is predominantly a city dweller and city investigator; it is relatively uncommon that he treks out on adventures, but the case of the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the attempted murder of Sir Henry Baskerville led him to the Dartmoor plain. Thus, country garb was in order. This is where we get much of our imagery. Also helping with this is that every major actor to play Holmes has considered 'Hound of the Baskervilles' to be the ultimate Holmes story to act -- rather like the Hamlet of Conan Doyle's ... . The Hound of the Baskervilles (Penguin Popular Classics)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
January 25, 1996
The Hound of the Baskervilles is a curious story which follows the pursuits more of dear Watson than the master detective, with periods when the reader really would like to have the input of Holmes ever unflappable logic but are denied it. Despite this the story of Charles Baskervilles death and the spectral hound which, legend has it, haunts the sinister moors is an intriguing and compelling tale which introduces new sub-stories and wonderfully diverse characters to keep the reader satisfied. The end is perhaps slightly too predictable and it seems unlikely that the wily culprit would be duped so easily. There is no doubt that it is a times slightly too fantastic in nature but indeed to a certain extent this only adds to the thrills.
Some slight problems but ... Read More:

. The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Collector's Library Editions)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
September 01, 2005
The COMPLETE Sherlock Holmes collection is something you HAVE to have on your bookshelf if you ever read a book. Like Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Alexandre Dumas, Aldous Huxley, Oscar Wilde and SO many more... Conan Doyle is such a big name that no proper collection is complete without it. Have you ever said: "Elementary, Dr. Watson", knowing it was taken from a Sherlock Holmes story without ever having read one? My point exactly. A proper degree of classical education requires a certain amount of FIRST-HAND knowledge. You need to read the books yourself.
In this case, it doesn't take much of an effort; the stories of Holmes & Watson are quite entertaining. Some of them, frankly, aren't as good as they're hyped up to be, but others are everything you've ever ... Read More:

. The Sign of Four (Penguin Classics)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
July 05, 2001
The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in my opinion is the best of the Sherlock Holmes longer stories. It is both imaginative and interesting with the easy style which characterises Doyle's work. The story is complex with interesting and well rounded characters and this makes it a joy to read. As for it being the best of the Sherlock Holmes novels I believe that it is because in my opinion The Valley of Fear and A Study in Scarlet suffer from structual problems and The Hound of the Baskervilles while excellent is just pipped at the post by The Sign of Four.

. The Lost World & Other Stories (Wordsworth Classics)
by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
April 05, 1995
Edward Malone, reporter for the Daily Gazette, finds himself caught up in the claims of the eccentric Professor G. E. Challenger to have found a South American plateau where dinosaurs still live. Malone volunteers for a fact-finding mission, along with the dubious Professor Summerlee and the fearless big game hunter Lord John Roxton. The band voyages to South America, journeys to the plateau, and finds it filled with plants and animals for many different epochs. Finding themselves marooned on the plateau, the team faces many dangers and adventures. While somewhat dated, this book is well written and exciting to read. As a matter of fact, part of the book's charm is its pre-Great War feel. If you like adventure stories, Arthur Conan Doyle, or big game hunters, then this book is for you!
