. Band of Brothers
by: Stephen E. Ambrose
September 17, 2001
Stephen Ambrose presents an account of an American paratrooper company in the Second World War. Solely focusing on Easy from beginning to end allows you to really get to know individual members how they lived and as another reviewer said gives you a real insight of stepping out into battle from beginning to end.
My first criticism of the book would be the contribution; it seems those who contributed get put forward in a hero like manner with others who sadly could not contribute sometimes getting portrayed in a very bad light at times. There are times Ambrose goes over board with praise such as Winters quipped this, Winters commanded that and everybody loved Winters. Don't get me wrong I'm not doubting what he did but there are ... . D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II
by: Stephen E. Ambrose
June 05, 2002
I'm just over half way through this book and I'm very disappointed. I don't think Stephen Ambrose is a very good writer, he seems to repeat himself quite a bit and the personal accounts are handled in a rather clunky manner. I started reading this book after reading his Pegasus Bridge account and although that had the same style of writing at least he didn't spend the entire time comparing American superiority against British inferiority. No, after checking out other reviews here, I'm moving on to something new and will wait for Rick Atkinsons third book in his liberation trilogy or I'll read Max Hastings 'Overlord'. However, I am left with one question. How did Ambrose allow so many British actors to act as Americans in the series Band of Brothers, including the lead ... Read More:

. The Victors: The Men of WWII
by: Stephen E. Ambrose
April 04, 2005
How disappointing this book was after the first couple of chapters. A rehash of his other books with a dollop of lazy American "centric" writing of history - how hard the Americans had it compared to the British, Canadians, Poles, Free French & other Allies. How much more tenacious & positive they were in their strategems & how much better was their fighting man, their staff & their generals.
I over simplify, because Ambrose does acknowledge some of the things the Americans got wrong but he almost gloats about where those fighting along side them (particularly the British) do not match the "achievements" of the US forces.
A very one sided & superficial analysis of the war in Europe post the landings on D - Day.
It makes you wonder why the ... Read More:

. The Bitter Woods: The Battle of the Bulge
by: John S.D. Eisenhower
September 07, 2001
Eisenhower has a way of bringing you right into the fight. He covers in great detail the extreme conditions the American GI faced in winter battle. I have read over 25 books on WWII and this is a good one. My one complaint is the book uses so much military jargon that it can be overwhelming for a non military person. He should at least explain in the beginning some of the military terms used. For example, how many men in a platoon, division, etc...(I have the same complaint about most WWII history books). Overall this is a good read for anyone interested in WWII.

. Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors
by: Stephen E. Ambrose
June 02, 2003
Another bestselling and fantastic book from bestselling historian Stephen E. Ambrose, a dual biography of two great nineteenth century warriors, General Custer and Crazy Horse, and the Battle of Little Bighorn. On June 25, 1876, 611 men of the United States 7th Cavalry rode towards the banks of the Little Bighorn where three thousand Indians stood waiting for battle. The lives of two great war leaders would soon become forever linked: Crazy Horse, leader of the Sioux, and General George Armstrong Custer. This masterly dual biography tells the epic story of the lives of these two men: both were fighters of legendary daring, both became honoured leaders in their societies when still astonishingly young, and both died when close to the supreme political heights. Yet they - like the nations they represented ... Read More:
