Stephen Ambrose presents an account of an American paratrooper company in the Second World War. Solely focusing on Easy from beginning to end allows you to really get to know individual members how they lived and as another reviewer said gives you a real insight of stepping out into battle from beginning to end.

My first criticism of the book would be the contribution; it seems those who contributed get put forward in a hero like manner with others who sadly could not contribute sometimes getting portrayed in a very bad light at times. Wouw!! If this is the way Stephen E. Ambrose is writing all his books, this book will be first of many by him I will read!!!
I have played some boardgame with Pegasus Bridge in it and never really understood the importancy of capturing the bridge until I read this book. John Howard and his man did the free world a great service by capturing the bridge!

Stephen Ambrose starts to grate after a while, no doubt about it. There are some interesting nuggets of info here, thou some of Ambrose's 'facts' have been proven to be anything but recently. If you want a US biased and false view of WW2, read Ambrose's books. If you want good history and military facts read Beevor, Hastings or Ryan.

I'm just over half way through this book and I'm very disappointed. I don't think Stephen Ambrose is a very good writer, he seems to repeat himself quite a bit and the personal accounts are handled in a rather clunky manner. I started reading this book after reading his Pegasus Bridge account and although that had the same style of writing at least he didn't spend the entire time comparing American superiority against British inferiority. No, after checking out other reviews here, I'm moving on to something new and will wait for Rick Atkinsons third book in his liberation trilogy or I'll read Max Hastings 'Overlord'. I've had this book since I was in college and I have used it over and over again throughout my time there and at university where I studied American History and Politics. Ambrose gives a clear, understandable account of American's foreign policy that even someone with little to no knowledge could grasp on first reading. If you're interested in the subject take it from someone who has had to read a a fair few books on this topic. You can't get any better than this.

It makes you feel that you are there in the thick of it.

Just gets better every time I read it.

The remaning books in the collection are also very good.

How disappointing this book was after the first couple of chapters. A rehash of his other books with a dollop of lazy American "centric" writing of history - how hard the Americans had it compared to the British, Canadians, Poles, Free French & other Allies. How much more tenacious & positive they were in their strategems & how much better was their fighting man,their staff & their generals.
I over simplify, because Ambrose does acknowledge some of the things the Americans got wrong but he almost gloats about where those fighting along side them (particularly the British) do not match the "achievements" of the US forces.
A very one sided & superficial analysis of the war in Europe post the landings on D - Day.

Like E Hughes (below) the history of the USA was not really taught at the school I attended. My knowledge was acquired from TV, film, books and more recently, travel.
Ambrose has covered his subjects well, describing their epic journey to the Pacific Ocean with a zeal that is infectious! So much so, that I am planning my own journey to Montana, Idaho and Oregon to try and follow in Lewis and Clark's footsteps.
Anyone wishing to understand the mindset of our 'cousins' across the water, should seriously consider reading this book.

Eisenhower has a way of bringing you right into the fight. He covers in great detail the extreme conditions the American GI faced in winter battle. I have read over 25 books on WWII and this is a good one. My one complaint is the book uses so much military jargon that it can be overwhelming for a non military person. He should at least explain in the beginning some of the military terms used. For example, how many men in a platoon, division, etc...(I have the same complaint about most WWII history books). Overall this is a good read for anyone interested in WWII.
