An engrossing book.
This book gives an excellent insight into the work and philosophy of a first rate chef. Most of the recipes are quite sophisticated, and the book is probably not one for a novice or nervous cook. The photographs are beautiful, and give splendid ideas for presentation. As a vegetarian, I was particularly interested in the puddings, which use pectin as a setting agent, rather than gelatine. Interesting and useful too are the 'mini recipes' - the bits between the main productions with instructions and techniques on making and using such things as powders, oils and stocks.

Quick clear up. This set comprises of both standard individual books, The French Laundry and Bouchon with a nice printed hardboard sleeve (pictured). The addition of the hardboard sleeve to slot both books in along with the price is the only difference in buying both books separately.

Onto the review.
I knew I wanted The French Laundry to challenge myself and take my cooking to another level, but wasn't really drawn to Bouchon particularly (I have a lot of "normal" cookbooks). However when I purchased this from Amazon it was an extra £8 on top of The French Laundry to get Bouchon thrown in (Bouchon RRP £40), so I thought why not and ended up surprised how much I like the Bouchon book.

I will start by saying I have only given this book 4 stars due to the fact that I have given its bigger brother, The French Laundry cookbook, 5 stars. In my opinion TFL is a better cookbook for those, like me, who like intricate dishes. Having said that, Bouchon can be just as intricate with some dishes, and the result just as pleasing.

Thomas Keller's style comes through in this cookbook, much like TFL, and I agree with the previous reviewer that you will probably come back to this cook book more often than TFL. The book is well laid out, has fantastic photographs for nearly all the dishes on offer, and offers some invaluable tips on how to get the best from certain dishes or certain techniques.
