. Eastern Europe (Lonely Planet Multi Country Guide)
by: Tom Masters

Having just spent 3 weeks in Romania, Macedonia & Albania - this guide was a true travel companion.
Having used the 2005 version of this guide to travel around Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Croatia in March 2006 - this one was much more useful and the writers had gone to great pains to make everything accurate (unlike their Western Balkans guide which was awash with misinformation and inaccuracies, normally regarding telephone numbers etc)
Having also brought the Bradt Albania guide with us (thank god we never relied on this as their pricing information for accommodation was grossly out of date & there was a real laziness in updating vital information) the Lonely Planet was the one that got grubbiest from ... Read More:

. Maldives (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Tom Masters

I agree with all the people above: When you have booked your trip to the Maldives you do not need Lonely Planet to tell you where you can find the beach on the island you are staying. If you think it is interesting you might find pleasure in reading the very informative brief on Maldivian history and current political environment. Even if this is not the case, you might benefit from the complete listing and review of all resorts in operation at the time of publication. But, you need to get hold of the book before you book your trip. If you plan to dive there is also valuable information for you in the book.

. Bulgaria (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Richard Watkins, Tom Masters
June 01, 2005
I visited Sofia and Plovdiv for 4 days recently, and for my purposes found this guide to be of average usefulness, nothing more. The coverage on Sofia was underwhelming; the main sights and accommodation needs are all well covered, but the recommended eating and drinking venues are rather run-of-the-mill, even lacklustre. Certainly it does not do justice to Sofia's well deserved reputation as an up-and-coming, ultra-hip metropolitan location, where in my experience there is no shortage of exceptional and perfectly affordable bars and restaurants, e.g. 10 leva for a filling and impeccable two-course "Chef's Recommendations" at Upstairs, and the amazing Vinobar which is worth visiting just to see the winelist of 300 varieties.
As for Plovdiv, ... Read More:

. St Petersburg (Lonely Planet City Guides)
by: Tom Masters
March 01, 2005
Parts of this seemingly republished in 2005 book are hideously outdated. The places to eat section especially so. Over half the places in the guide no longer existed and some of the 'key phrases' in the back were very random whilst others such as 'bill please' were omitted. That said, the guide to the neighbourhoods and what places there are to see as well as a comprehensive history of the city is all good and well. Throughout the guide, prices for various attractions and places to eat are all misquoted and little attention should be paid to them.
Don't walk to any of the out of the way eating places in this guide as tube stations are few and far between and its most likely not there any more. Stick to the main street - Nevsky Pr.
