. Edinburgh (Lonely Planet City Guide)
by: Tom Smallman
January 31, 2002
Being a fan of the Lonely Planet series, i thought this would be ideal for a weekend away in Edinburgh. However, i was sorely disappointed with the information provided in this guidebook. It is only a couple of years old, yet much of the information is out of date, meaning we often went in search of resturants that were not longer there. The reviews also tended to be misleading; many of the pubs which got excellent write-ups were very ordinary and some others weren't given the credit they deserved. All in all this guide, as with all Lonely Planet guides, crams a lot of information into a compact book, however this was not always reliable and will make me think twice when i buy my next travel guide.

. New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Tom Smallman, David Ellis, Michael Clark
October 31, 2000
Handy overview of the things to see if you are travelling all round the region, but it's woefully short on the nitty gritty of cheap accomodation and the specifics of something not quite as famous as the Empire State. This is to be expected, given that it covers quite a large region, the length devoted to each area is quite short. Lots of historical introduction and prepping, but less than desired in terms of practical information. We tried out a highly recommended restaurant and but in the end would have preferred some of the cosy traditional restaurants tucked in and around the area we discovered later. However, the gossip columns with tidbits of gory history like daredevils going over Niagara are really something to read for ... Read More:

. Dublin (Lonely Planet City Guide)
by: Tony Wheeler, Tom Smallman, Pat Yale

We found the LP guide to Dublin to be as accurate and informative as all the others we've used.
Information is presented in a very easy to follow format. Recommendations are to be relied upon. We tried a Lebanese restaurant in the book and had a truly delicious meal. We booked a lodge on LP recommendation and it was exactly as described in the book. We did a walking tour in the book and it was brilliant.
I don't think I could actually do a sightseeing holiday now without LP as a companion. I'd feel lost without one.
