. McNae's Essential Law for Journalists
from: OUP Oxford
June 21, 2007
As a working journalist, this is the only book I (and every colleague I've ever worked with on any newsdesk) reach for time and time again. Not only is it bang up to date, it explains all aspects of reporting law clearly and succinctly.
Unsure of what libel is? How to defend against it? Are you in contempt of court? Breaching the Official Secrets Act? Taking photographs of children? Invading somebody's privacy? McNae's knows. And it's written in a way to tell you quickly.
It's known as The Bible in the regional newsrooms I've worked in all my life - and it's easy to see why when you read it. I can't recommend this highly enough: EVERY reporter should have their own copy.

McNae's Essential Law for Journalist 17th Edition RRP £14.95 McNae's Essential law for journalists is a magnificent insight into the legal profession without having studied before. I can understand if you are just starting a journalism course like I was you may find this book overwhelming to read, but I can assure you that this book will take you all the way through your journalistic/media careers, if you follow it and know your law, hopefully you will not find yourself in deep waters with a law suit pending. The book is great for anyone who is just starting their journalistic careers through to an experienced journalist. The 17th edition has been released two years after the previous edition and is important through the developments ... Read More:

. McNae's Essential Law for Journalists
by: Tom Welsh, Walter Greenwood, David Banks

To the general reader, especially one with a legal education, a very interesting practical guide to the legal constraints on the freedom of the press. If a journalist is told something 'newsworthy' but 'scandalous' by someone about someone else, can the journalist report what he has been told and, if so, in what way?
Reading this book I could understand, for example, why we used to hear nothing at all about a crime once someone had been arrested and charged with it (and had to wait until the trial started to find out what it was all about) but, after the Norwich 'sex worker' murders recently, the TV and the press where able to continue giving us quite a lot of information about the crimes, the victims and the suspect even after he had been charged but ... The book goes into depth on most topics and there is helpful information on recent acts that could hinder a journalist. Topics covered range from Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts to Broadcast Journalism, from Contempt of Court to Crime, from National Security to Freedom of Speech. This is an extremely important purchase for any publishing writer. Clearly written and easy to understand.

. Porno
by: Irvine Welsh
August 26, 2002
Welsh comes back to us with the new adventures of Renton and Sick Boy. Renton is now pretty much honest, while Sick Boys his aunt's pub and makes it a swinger's venue. It's a completely different direction Welsh is taking here, but it's all the same shocking, shattering, and rather funny (often), moving (sometimes) and revolting (the rest).
