. Southeast Asia on a Shoestring (Lonely Planet Shoestring Guides)

Lonely Planet - great for maps and local transport but thats about all! As any experienced traveller will tell you, the minute any restaurant, cafe or hotel gets it name in LP then its prices will double and the standards will half!
I also agree with some of the other comments here, why do they try so hard to be cool and why do they tell us what we should and shouldnt do?
An OK book but now and then leave it in your backpack and be adventurous.

. Tokyo (Lonely Planet City Guide)
by: Andrew Bender, Wendy Yanagihara

I usually buy the top ten guides by eyewitness but they didn't have one for Tokyo so I went for this one instead - glad I did now. The guide is very easy to read and gives places to see/eat etc.. in a nice handy sized book. The subway map was a lifesaver and if you are like me and can't be bothered reading lengthy text just to find out where to go then I will definitely recommend this guide. This guide helped us find our way in Tokyo and made our holiday most enjoyable.

. Japan (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

The Lonely Planet guide to Japan is a detailed and accesible guide to the country, providing a brief historical and cultural overview of Japanese affairs and then exploring sites of interest. The book incorporates many useful features including maps, key phrases and a comprehensive index. The book is mainly black and white but does incorporate a few colour snap shots.
At over 850 pages, the book is packed full of useful information but is also bulky and awkward to fit in a small bag meaning that most days, I left it at the hotel and relied on other books. Maps of smaller cities are helpful but I did find the Tokyo maps difficult to follow and poorly labelled. Descriptions of sites tend to be factual and informative but do not always convey an ... . Vietnam (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Nick Ray, Wendy Yanagihara

What is it about Lonely Planet? Like a rash, their guides are everywhere - sometimes in the most unwelcome of places. Nicely packaged and handy they may be, but they are often woefully inaccurate and incomplete. This is no exception. Cutting and pasting a few paragraphs about history and culture, this really skims the surface of a fascinating country, and leaves many fascinating places out. If you're a twentysomething Australian back-packer, then this book will probably make you very happy; if you're more discerning, and looking to explore the country's lesser known areas and learn more about its culture (and if you're interested in accuracy), then I would go for the infinitely better Rough Guide.
