. The Railway Man
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: Eric Lomax
January 03, 1998
Without doubt the finest book I've ever read. Anybody who can read this without tear staining the pages has no soul or emotions.
It starts slowly showing a boy who is awkward because he doesn't share the normal interests of youth but it develops through his age experience and the horrors he endures to provide a man of intense intelligence compassion and the ultimate forgiveness to provide us all with a desire to do the best we can, and yes I'm crying as I write this review. I've just ordered a new copy as my other one is very dog eared.

. Eyewitness Auschwitz: Three Years in the Gas Chamber
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: Filip Muller
August 24, 1999
Truly the worst holocaust testimony ever written. So many mistakes throughout the whole text. Two examples of which were when Mr Muller mentions the camp orchestra in Birkenau, there was none.He also quotes that Kramer was in Birkenau and had came from Auschwitz 2.Both are one and the same place But important errors like these were repeated in every chapter and the worry for me is that Holocaust deniers may pick up on these simple blunders.Mr Mullers over use of adjectives and repetition of statements at times resulted in the book bordering on being boring. It read more like a students written essay who wasnt fully informed ,rather than an actual Holocaust survivors memoirs.Ive read many more imformative Holocaust testimonies and even Mr Muller must ... . Hitler
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: Ian Kershaw
August 07, 2008
The best yet biography of Hitler, discussing in extent the first years of his life. Presents theories of how his ideas were formed backing them or dismissing them with extensive bibliography research. Even though the crucial matter on how and when his ideas were formulated is not definitely answered it is the best effort on summarising the available data up to date. Reccomended to the serious in depth researcher, with excellent notes for further reading. V.A.Kouts

. Home Run: Escape from Nazi Europe
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: John Nichol, Tony Rennell
May 01, 2008
I am not one who normally undertakes writing a review, but having read this book I felt compelled to put 'pen to paper'. The book describes how allied servicemen caught in occupied Europe during the Second World War turned evader in trying to return to England, in short scoring a 'home run' against the Germans and their allies.
The book is compelling, riveting and your emotions sway at the turn of each page. You will undergo the exhilaration and relief of the service men evading capture and 'experience',through eyewitness statements the tension and fear of those who helped the evaders home. The testimonies in this book are as raw sixty-five years on as if they had been written in the immediate aftermath of the war. As a generation we forget that ... Read More:

. Fateful Choices: Ten Decisions That Changed the World, 1940-1941
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: Ian Kershaw
February 28, 2008
Kershaw examines ten choices that changed the world between the spring of 1940 and the end of 1941. Each of them could have been different (though Kershaw shows that the alternatives, usually lengthily and therefore somewhat repetitively rehearsed, were not very appealing, and sometimes not even sensible), and had they been different, the history of the Second World War and of the world following it would of course have been very different, too.
The first choice Kershaw examines is that of Britain refusing to negotiate with Hitler after the fall of France. The decision to fight on alone was taken by the inner war cabinet of only five men. Among them only the Foreign Minister, Lord Halifax, argued strongly for exploring possible peace terms. The ... Read More:

. Up the Line to Death: War Poets, 1914-18
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
from: Methuen Publishing Ltd
January 09, 1986
The poetry of soldiers of the First World War. Supposedly the War to end ALL Wars, it was a bloody, brutal and harrowing campaign. It wasn't over by Christmas as many had speculated and lasted four long years and it marked the emergence of a new type of warfare. The poetry in this anthology covers those four years of war, from the eager young men joining up to fight the enemy on foreign soil, to the maimed returning home and, of course, those who never returned at all. The poems are deeply moving, especially those of the men stuck in the trenches, knee deep in mud with nothing to listen to but the sound of shells exploding outside and nothing to see but their friends injured and killed. Some of the poems were written by men who ... Read More:

. Nemesis: The Battle for Japan, 1944-45
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
by: Max Hastings
October 01, 2007
At the Winchester Festival, reviewing his book, Hastings made a misguided and alarming remark, "that the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, other than Taranto Raid, played no significant part in WW2". It is therefore no wonder that he has omitted to include in his book the British Pacific Forces's successful attack on the Japanese oil refineries at Palembang (Java) in January 1945. Four British fleet carriers with 244 aircraft embarked disabled the refineries that were supplying Japan precious aviation fuel. Glancing through the book Hastings does not do justice to the Royal Navy in the Far East during 1944-45 period, until he educates himselve on the Fleet Air Arm's war effort, I will stay clear of his books. Question for you Max, which allied torpedo bomber aircraft sank more enemy ... Read More:

. Nella Last's War: The Second World War Diaries of 'Housewife 49'
City Travel Guides > Books > Battles and Campaigns
from: Profile Books Ltd
November 16, 2006
I can only add to the unalloyed praise of others and wish that Nella Last could know what pleasure and enlightenment her "scribbling" would bring to others over 60 years later.
She writes beautifully and naturally, but what's most interesting is the way she changes as the war progresses. At the beginning she is sickly and weak, plagued with arthritis, and refers to a "breakdown" she had a few years before. But she determines to "do something" for the war effort and joins the WVS. From there she goes from strength to strength, and the evolution of her ideas is fascinating; she comes to see her conventional marriage to an old stick of a husband as "slavery". She's also very observant and perceptive of the people around her.
She writes lyrically of walks home by moonlight, and ... Read More:
