This magnificent book must be the definitive work in English on the uprising of the Poles in Warsaw in 1944 against their German oppressors. (Potential readers should not confuse this sixty-six day battle with the rather more limited and tragic ghetto rising of 1943.) The breadth and sweep of Davies' book and the staggering amount of research that must have been undertaken are truly impressive. Davies begins by examining the attitudes towards the occupation of Poland and the possibility of an uprising in Warsaw that prevailed in the Allied capitals of London and Washington, also in Moscow whose armies were fast approaching the city and in Poland itself, a country with a long history of insurrection against occupiers. The book describes George Millar's experiences as an SOE operative in the Doubs region of Northern France in the last months of occupation, from his training to being parachuted into France, and the end of occupation. The book is written in a style unlike so many other war memoirs, which often see things very much in black and white, good vs evil. George Millar was in a subtle way, I think, far ahead of his time. His Maquis is everything from hilariously funny to terribly sad, and always told from a refreshingly enlightened point of view.
I saw him interviewed on television in about 2001. He said something like "When I think about the war I can't help thinking how silly it all was." Mr Millar, for your wonderful book and sincere wisdom, I salute you.

I bought this after watching Marcel Ophuls 'The Sorrow and the Pity', and wanting to know more about the reality of the French occupation and collaboration. It's more of a lengthy essay than an in-depth examination of the issues, but the author does pack a lot of information into it. It's an interesting introduction to, and summary of, this difficult but fascinating period of French wartime history.

I heard this book recommended on the radio by Ottakers bookshops as their top pick for the Autumn. I was immediately curious and went out and bought it. I completely agree with them. Apart from the fact that it is a beautiful book (I've now bought an extra copy for my aunt for xmas) it is wonderfully written. It is a very honest and unselfconscious (and unself-pitying) memoir of living in the ghetto by a teenage girl, from the invasion of Poland to 1944. It drew me in from the first page, and I read it straight through.

One of the things I really appreciated is that it is a very warts and all account - talking about the terrible suffering and desperate (and impressive) efforts of the community to alleviate it, as well as the contrast with life of the better off ... Read More:
