. Through the Jungle of Death: A Boy's Escape from Wartime Burma
City Travel Guides > Books > War in the Pacific
by: Stephen Brookes
March 16, 2000
Expecting a rather grim trek through familiar territory I found instead a remarkable story of loss and endurance told with a surprisingly lyrical and at times humorous touch. A eleven year old Anglo-Burmese boy tells of the flight of the Brookes family from the advancing Japanese army in Burma during the second world war. Fleeing first to China then back through Burma and on to India young Stevie tells of his frustration and anger at being dragged along not knowing what was happening or why. There were several attempts at escape, each thwarted by events or the stubborness of one or other parent, eventually leading into the mountains of Upper Burma. Walking knee deep in mud, fighting off ambushes by renegade Chinese soldiers, or just surviving the malarial ... Read More:

. The Battle for Iwo Jima 1945
City Travel Guides > Books > War in the Pacific
by: Derrick Wright
January 01, 2008
It's a thorough, well researched and skilfully conveyed story of the utter carnage that was Iwo Jima. It covers all aspects and issues comprehensively: the strategic importance of the island, the direct effect the cost in lives that the Japanese exacted had upon the decision to use the atomic bomb (the argument being that it saved lives given the alternative scenario), and of course it covers the day to day planning and execution of the battle from the top down to the front lines. The appendices are very good, listing in some detail every one of the Medals of Honour won during the battle, detailing the order of battle of both sides and telling the story surrounding the iconic flag raising.
It is difficult to conceive of a more savage and daunting prospect ... Read More:

. Burma: The Forgotten War
City Travel Guides > Books > War in the Pacific
by: Jon Latimer
August 01, 2005
I decided to read this as I am about to embark on a module of study on Burma and needed some background information. This book seemed an excellent choice as it was quoted as being comprehensive.
It is indeed exhaustive in its detailing of every incident of the Second World War in Burma, and if you are looking for this level of detail you will not be disappointed. If however, you are looking for an overview I suggest you look elsewhere.
I must applaud Mr Latimer for his dedication to what is clearly a complex subject, with incoming troops from all quarters of the globe and the many factions within Burma itself, both tribal and political, this was clearly never going to be straightforward.
I confess however, that I found it exhausting to read and so complex ... Read More:

. The Unforgettable Army: Slim's XIVth Army in Burma
City Travel Guides > Books > War in the Pacific
by: Michael Hickey
November 16, 1998
This is an excellent book which gives a comprehensive and highly readable account of Fourteenth Army, Britain's 'Forgotten Army' which drove the Japanese out of Burma in the Second World War. This book brings alive and in detail the unique feature of 14th Army which was its mixed, multi racial nature; Indian, Gurkha, British, East African and West African regiments fought alongside one another under the remarkable leadership of General Slim. This book also covers the amazing audacity and detailed planning involved in the Chindits' Operation Thursday which took a division strength glider force deep behind enemy lines (surely an airborne operation to rival Arnhem)and covers Slim's own masterstroke - the crossing of the Irrawaddy in two places. The book also gives ... Read More:
