I have just finished reading this book tonight and it was brilliant. All the men that took part in the Great Escape digging the tunnel as well as helpers that did not escape were so brave. I would recommed this book to anyone that has a interest in World War 2. Well worth reading.

A fantastic read that gives a fascinating insight into the terror and desires of the captured prisoners of war. A great read, I read it in a day and was wanting to know more.

I have now bought the film version to see how it tranlsates on the screen.

..What lends this book its immediacy is that it was written, and published, while the war was still in progress and the good guys weren't winning; also that instead of the usual Nazis v (mainly) Jews, it is French v (mainly) leftists of all descriptions. But this doesn't convey the book's flavour. It's a human story, rich in resonances. Even if you don't read 'war books', ignore the rather off-putting title and get swept away! Then for a more soothing view of the tail-end of the war, read Love and War in the Appenines.

This book is brilliant from the attempt to hold back the enemy in Burma to capture, then as a prisoner of war the brutality starvation and desease, then the compassion and humanity of prisoners for prisoners.

I was given this book by an ex WW2 POW, 89 years of age who spent nearly five years in three prison camps in the Silesia area of Poland. I agreed to ghostwrite his book after listening to his incredible story. "Do The Birds Still Sing in Hell?" will be released by Libros International around September 2008. This book provided invaluable research and along with the first hand accounts from my 'old soldier' Horace Greasley, I began to build up a picture of the hell that these unsung heroes went through.
