This book is the first history of the Third Reich I know which does not begin or end with May 8th, 1945. This unusual approach to tell the story of the fighting against Nazism in one single book, from the preparations of the landing in Normandy to the judgements in Nuremberg, from the evolution of Allied war strategies to post-war denazification makes the book very much worth reading. Toby Thacker's book is an enormous achievement and I cannot remember having read such an interesting, concise and complete account of the last war and the first post-war years. The coherence of the Allied fight against nazism can be seen - for the first time ?! - in this book.
Toby Thacker's monograph also stands out because of the important amount of documents ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Nuremberg Diary
.Nuremberg Diary
City Travel Guides > Books > Nuremburg
by: G.M. Gilbert

August 01, 1995
Gus Gilbert, had free access to all the defendents during the entire Nuremberg trials. He spent much time in discussion with all the Nazi defendents, Goering, Ribbentrop, Hess, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Frank, Frick, Sauckel, Speer, Schacht, Funk, Papen, Neurath, Schirach, Seyss-Inquart, Streicher, Keitel, Jodl, Doenitz and Fritzsche. Robert Ley had committed suicide in his cell prior to the trial.

The book is a record of the defendents thoughts and a diary of conversations and observations. It is facinationing. Author Gilbert was a psychologist by profession and also acted as a sympathetic ear and councillor for some of the defendents and in some cases really gained their confidence. I have a very big problem with this because he also ... Read More:

Martin Middlebrook has done it again. A very well presented and researched book from both sides perspective. It details the most costly raid by the RAF in planes lost in a particular raid and shows the courage that the crews had to go through night after night in helping the Allies to win the war. Especially poignant as the bombing policy by the Allies has been much maligned. I would seriously recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the second world war.

I would only add to the synopsis that the personal accounts in this book make this whole episode real for those of us who were not alive at the time. From page 1 to the end, the facts will keep your interest. If you don't have an opinion about the arguement as to whether Bomber Command deserved a campaign medal, this will help you decide for yourself I'm sure..... READ THIS BOOK, you will be glad that you did...

I could not urge anyone enough to buy this book - an engrossing tale of the trials and the participants. I found the political and legal arguments concerning the moral authority of the court very interesting and some of the remarks attributed to the chief gaoler, Col Andrus, hilarious. Perhaps the best aspect of the book's coverage is the description of the relationships between the various defendants and those of the captives and their lawyers. The political wrangling between the four powers is also well covered.

I am very disappointed that this appears to be the first review of this book, because it is fantastic. Anyone with even the slightest interest in WW2 really should read this. I would very much like the authors to consider a second, ... Read More:

There are no doubts that the book is well written and entertaining, and that it takes the reader through the Nuremberg Trial in a way which makes it difficult to put the book down. However, I've read this book after having read Hitler's biography by Ian Kershaw, and I found it difficult to read a history book written as a novel. I have enjoyed more the 'scientific' approach of Ann & John Tusa in their "The Nuremberg Trial".
