Up until the 1970's the view of the Wehrmacht as by and large honourable soldiers was rarely challenged in the west.

Only in the last couple of decades have scholars like Bartov chipped away at this myth by analysing the great mass of photographs, letters and diaries that show ordinary Wehrmacht soldiers enthusiastically participating in atrocities, while documentary evidence from higher up the command chain has illustrated the degree to which the army was intimately involved at every level in genocide.

There is ultimately a disappointing work with a very conventional viewpoint. There is surely much more to be said about British cinema of WW2 than this. Surely comedy played an important role in British films during the war: Let George Do It and such films were as important as Henry V. Much better to find a copy Raymond Durgnat's inspired A Mirror for England in a second-hand bookstore. Three stars top.

I want to disagree with the three previous reviews, to defend Fussell's project. One reviewer seems to be confusing "Wartime" with Fussell's memoir "Doing Battle." The former is not intended as a memoir but as an alternate history--an alternative to the kind of history represented by a book recommended by another of the reviewers, i.e.,, Stephen Ambrose's "Citizen Soldiers." If Ambrose's book can be seen as a companion to Spielberg's romantic (and therefore disappointing) "Saving Private Ryan," then "Wartime" is parallel to--in fact is clearly inspired by--Heller's satirical "Catch-22." Step back into time to see how the participants of the war saw themselves and others through the postcard artist.
Excellent narrative from a knowledgable author made this an impressive book to read, learn, admire the quality of artmanship, and ponder the feelings of the time.
The book started with a few world war one propaganda postcards, so the reader gets a "feel" of why thy were produced.
The book is well worth the cover price for the beautiful colour postcards displayed alone, many which are rare.
The only thing stopping me giving it a full five star rating was "price guide", as these go out of date so quick.
