City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Real Enigma Heroes
.The Real Enigma Heroes
City Travel Guides > Books > Enigma Code
by: Phil Shanahan

January 06, 2008
Like many people who are obsessed with history, I really enjoy pondering the great `what if?' questions. But here's a `what if?' that is probably considered less frequently. What if Britain had failed to break the Enigma code? How then would history have altered?
The answer to this question is simple. The whole outcome of the Second World War might have been very different. And the Allies could easily have lost.
But how many of us really know the true background to how those codes came to be broken?
This excellent new book helps us by taking a fresh angle on a fascinating part of Second World War history and lifting the cloak on a decades-long secret.
By way of background, we need to go back to the early 1940s. Britain ... Read More:

A very interesting book written by those who were involved. Much easier to read than Paul Gannon's book as it is personal rather than historical from documents. A very interesting book and I can thoroughly recommend it.

My Grandfather was a survivor from the Dunedin, although he would never talk about his experience. Sadly he passed away 8 years ago and by pure chance we stumbled upon this remarkable book. It has given us so much - a real insight in to life on board ship, a true account of what happened after the ship went down and a real feeling of the friendships and bonds that were formed by these brave young men. Stuart Gill's book is beautifully done, with true accounts from his own Father as well as photos and information from other crew members. For us as a family it has brought a little bit of our brave Marine back to us.

A disappointing book, given the exciting subject matter. The different authors recounting their experiences gives it a disjointed feel and some are clearly better story tellers than others. The precise, repetitive 'Civil Service' language is wearing to read.

Perhaps it is easier for a telecommunications engineer turned computer software engineer to read but I found the book to be compelling. The book is not only technically impressive, it rings true in the portrayal of the characters and their relationships. I think only the Post Office Engineering Department, later the P.O. Telecomms Business could have produced Tom Flowers. I worked with many like him, engineers with the intuitive flair necessary to create complex systems who entered the business at the very bottom and rose through it by merit.

.The Emperor's Codes: Bletchley Park's Role in Breaking Japan's Secret Ciphers
City Travel Guides > Books > Enigma Code
by: Michael Smith

November 09, 2000
The history of cracking the German codes during World War II has emerged slowly over the last ten years, and is now fairly fully described. By comparison, relatively little has been revealed about the comparable efforts aimed at Japanese codes. Recent declassification of British documents, privileged access to secret Australian histories of these events, and extensive new interviews with participants by Mr. Michael Smith (who spent 9 years in codebreaking for British Intelligence) provide the basis for the most complete and interesting account yet of the efforts aimed at Japan. The book is a success as a riveting history of individuals, for explaining the techniques involved, changing your view of how the war was won, and for raising fascinating new questions ... Read More:

if the previous reviewer Tom webb would have read the book he would the supposedly suspicious second author, Gerhard Weinberg, was in fact the man who was charged with the task of translating the document when it was first discovered after WWII. maybe if Mr. webb had read the book he would have not given people reading his review a misguided view. All in all the book is a good insight into the mind of hitler and focusses on his aims for the german foreign policy. an essential read for students of nazi foreign policy, or hitler in general.
