A really good book to introduce a child to Swahili prior to a holiday to East Africa. The art work is great and it contains some good pieces about african culture. Although limited to an alphabet book I found it stimulated interest enough to encourage further learning.

This compact little book is the perfect place to start learning Swahili. It is easy to carry around and dip into. The pronunciation guide is printed alongside the Swahili and English, so everything is where you need it and clearly laid out. I found a lot of the phrases useful and after a little practice, was able to try them out with confidence. There are also some nice little tips sprinkled throughout the book, cultural information, etiquette, etc.

After a couple of business trips to Kenya, I decided it was time I tried to learn some basic Swahili words. Swahili is an enjoyable language to learn, and the locals are really impressed when you speak a few words. So I think it is well worth getting this book and putting in a little ... Read More:

I bought this book last year before going on holiday to Madagascar. I'm really glad I did - I found it extremely useful! I couldn't find anything else with Malagasy phrases.

The Malagasy people really appreciate visitors trying to speak a few words of their language, as so few do! This book provides plenty of instant `ready to use phrases' - from the obvious counting numbers, `please' and `thank you' to `pleased to meet you', `that was delicious' and `watch out!' - to name just a few! There are sections on various travel / holiday topics - including food and drink - so I was able to ask for `red wine' and/or `water' in restaurants and buy bananas in markets in Malagasy.

This Swahili/English - English/Swahili pocket dictionary is very handy. Its 596 pages cover over 35,000 entries in both languages. The English words have the phonetic transcriptions, whereas the Swahili nouns have their plurals shown in brackets.
As it is written in the foreword, this practical dictionary proves to be "an aid in navigating the growing global vocabulary of politics, telecommunications, computers, the Internet, tourism, business and travel."
At the end of the book there are some useful pages on English irregular verbs (infinitive Swahili verbs are given in brackets), Swahili noun classes, useful phrases and vocabulary, cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, weighs and measures, time, days of the week, months, star signs.

I have found it to be quite helpful in learning the language, and the 2 CDs assist greatly in learning to properly pronounce words. My only quibble was that the songs in the book are not on the CDs, as singing along would be another good way to learn the language and pronounciations. I would definitely recommend this book and the Yoruba Dictionary by the same author.

This book is exceptionally useful. It's great for those who are just passing through or those settling in Ethiopia for longer periods. Those who think they can wing it in Ethiopia with one of the European languages are wrong! It is one of the very few countries in Africa that has never been colonised (except for a brief period of occupation by the Italians during the war). A few people are okay speaking English, but outside Addis that's mainly kids (who learn it at school) - take the book, it really is worth it!

I found this book invaluble when I spent 3 months in Kenya. It is stuctured and progresses at a good pace with exercises to pratice what you have learnt. Used alongside flash cards and speaking Swahili as much as possible this book builds the language up thoroughly in stages.
