Larry Trask was one of the greatest contemporary writers on linguistics and grammar, and all his books are packed with lucid, complete, and often very witty descriptions. The cover of this book claims that it shows "How to use English correctly". This is perhaps misleading, because the book is not principally a usage guide. (Two other books by Trask - "Mind the Gaffe" and "The Penguin Guide to Punctuation - do provide solid, clear guidance on writing; anyone looking for instruction on how to write well should get hold of copies of these books first - they are indispensable.) I brought this book along with another book and set of tapes that was really expensive, the lonely planet phrasebook has turned out so much more usefull, I have been writing to a nepalese person with the books help. It is cheep, full of usefull info and set out really well with loads of tips on culture and stuff too. A MUST.

The question was: what (or whatever) maintains the resting membrane potential nowadays! I always thought that it was the sodium pump (or Na K ATPase etc.). Recently, I heard: No, it is not the sodium pump that maintains the resting potential. So I checked both the Oxford and the Penguin Dictionaries of Biology. Oxford says that the resting potential is maintained by the sodium pump; however, the Penguin says it is the leaky potassium channels, and sodium pump plays a slight role. I have read a variety of books on the Thai language in my year in Thailand and this is the only book I've been able to make a real improvement in my Thai with.

In my ex pat community EVERYONE agreed that this is the best book to learn from. Oh and one tip for your studies, learn to read Thai Script it will accelerate your learning and help in real world situations.

A great book to get you started in learning Thai. It is quite gentle in progressing the ideas that every serious learner needs to cope with and has a strong method of familiarity with Thai letters.
I agree with other reviews that the pronounciation of u in words like nung is quite confusing because to all intents and purposes it should be pronounced nang, but there is a lot of enthusiasm in this book.
Will really get you moving along!!

Thats a big bummer. You should make it very clear that Pashto text is not written in Pashto. I was expecting to use this dictionary for translation of a bunch of software to Pashto and in turn improve my (especially reading and writing capabilities of) Pashto and this one problem in this dictionary makes that task much harder for me.

This is an excellent book for Urdu speakers to learn English. In addition to the dictionary, there are many other sections on parts of the body, months of the year, days of the week, etc.

I begun learning Hindi over 14 years ago and took the initiative to learn the Devanagari Script there and then. I bought an expensive Linguaphone Course and it really got me up and running.

Like all things though, my interest faded and every now and then I'd make an effort to crack on learning Hindi. A few years ago I came across the Teach Yourself Hindi pack, book and 2 CDs and my interest re-awakened. The TYH Courses are easier to grasp than the Linguaphone one, the latter of which came with 6 poorly recorded cassettes. Also, the grammar sections are a whole lot easier to grasp so I found myself progressing quite quickly.
