. Farsi (Persian) (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Other Middle East Languages
by: Yavar Dehghani
April 01, 2001
This phrasebook is a most useful book for anyone wanting to travel in Iran, or for any student of Persian (Farsi is the language's Persian name).
The scripts are done quite well. Each English phrase has two Persian equivalents, a colloquial Persian in Latin ('English') script and a formal written Persian in Arabic script. For example, "Do you speak English?" has the colloquial "[shomâ] ingilisi balad-in" in English script and the formal written "[shomâ] ingilisi balad-id" in Arabic script. The colloquial form is the one to learn, unless you want to write something. But the Iranian or Afghan you show the Persian phrase to will see the formal written language he or she expects to see. Just be aware that if you ask someone to read ... Read More:

. 201 Turkish Verbs (201 verbs series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Other Middle East Languages
by: Talat Sait Halman
May 26, 2000
The content of this small book is ideal for students and the keen tourist or new settler alike. It is neater and more compact than the 501 Verbs series. If you really need to know how to make the language "work" for you there is no better way to back up your lessons than with a verb table to learn from. I found the author's introduction helpful and enlightening as well. (Talat Sait Halman was Turkey's Ambassador for Cultural Affairs and former Minister of Culture and formerly of New York, Princetown and Columbia Universities).
So why only four stars? Well, in a word, presentation! In spite of it having a good cover and excellent paper quality, in line with all the other Barron's publications, the interior was in a truly awful reporter's ... Read More:

. Linguaphone PDQ Turkish (includes 4 CDs)
City Travel Guides > Books > Other Middle East Languages
from: Linguaphone
2001-12
This is a reasonably good course for a beginner to the Turkish Language. Although, as others have said it seems unsure who it is aimed at. I would have preferred vocabulary that was more orientated to Tourist situations. The course covered some of these, but also lapsed into business language with a man visiting a Business Conference and trying to explain what type of house he had in England and whether it had a garage and a garden. Don't be put off by this because it does teach you the basics very well (it only gets more complicated into CD 3 & 4).
I loaded the tracks onto my mp3 player and listened to them every day for about 6 months before our family holiday to Turkey. I also played the CDs in the car. My wife is not usually good at ... Read More:
